Game Story


CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 24
points and Elden Campbell and David Wesley added 17 apiece as
the Charlotte Hornets held on for a 96-92 victory over the New
Jersey Nets. 


Jones, who hit four crucial foul shots in the final 2 1/2
minutes, helped the Hornets withstand New Jersey's comeback down
the stretch. Stephon Marbury's two foul shots capped a 9-0 run
that gave the Nets an 87-86 lead with 2:45 remaining. 


After three lead changes, Jones hit two from the line to give
Charlotte a 92-89 lead with 1:36 remaining. The Nets tied it on
Keith Van Horn's 3-pointer 17 seconds later. 


After the Hornets took the lead for good on Bobby Phills' foul
shot with 57 seconds remaining and David Wesley drew a charge on
Kendall Gill. 


"I was the last guy to rotate over," said Wesley, who converted
a pair from the line with 18 seconds to play to make it 95-92.
"I gambled and got lucky.  We got stops when we needed them.
We're at home and we want to stay tough." 


New Jersey had two chances to tie on the ensuing possession but
Gill and Scott Burrell missed 3-pointers. Campbell made 1-of-2
foul shots with five seconds to go to put away the game. 


"I knew it would be a tough game," Charlotte coach Paul Silas
said. "Tonight's lesson was that you can't look at the record
and evaluate a team. You've got to go out and play and play
hard." 


"We have to play better against any competition," Jones said. "I
think we need to put teams away early.  These guys in the NBA,
they can play. If you give a team like New Jersey confidence,
they can play with you." 


Charlotte shot just 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field but
converted 24 turnovers into 35 points.  New Jersey turned 17
Hornets' miscues into 18 points. 


"We missed a lot of open shots at crucial times tonight," New
Jersey coach Don Casey said. "The energy was there. Our tactics
were better tonight and our post defense was effective. We play
hard enough and intelligent enough to win but our turnovers at
inopportune times are the difference." 


Campbell grabbed 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which build an 86-78
advantage on Phills' layup with 4:55 remaining. Charlotte scored
its final nine points from the line. 


"All we wanted to do was get to the line the last few
possessions," said Jones, who made all 12 of his foul shots. 


Marbury, who was called a "sissy" by Phoenix's Penny Hardaway
after Wednesday's game, had 31 points and eight assists for the
Nets (1-5). It was the fifth time in six games Marbury, who was
10-of-15 from the field, led New Jersey in scoring this season. 


"We just made a lot of unneccessary mistakes," Marbury said.
"It's always in the fourth quarter when you get the win or loss
and we just didn't convert. We showed a lot of heart." 


Phills contributed 15 points and Anthony Mason added 11 for
Charlotte, which improved to 4-0 at home this season. 


"We haven't been together that long," Silas said. "We haven't
jelled. It will take time. We're fortunate to have victories
under our belt." 


Wesley dished out 11 assists for the Hornets, who had a fight on
their hands after New Jersey jumped to a 7-0 lead. 


Charlotte responded with a 25-8 run and opened a 25-15 lead on
Wesley's layup with 3:38 left in the first quarter.  But the
Nets refused to go away despite once again playing without guard
Kerry Kittles, who missed his sixth straight game with a knee
injury. 


"They were matching us basket for basket," Jones said. "We came
away victorious. That's all that matters." 


New Jersey finished the second quarter with a 10-5 spurt to take
a 52-47 lead on Johnny Newman's 22-footer just before the
buzzer. 


Charlotte opened a 71-65 advantage on Jones' 3-pointer with 2:45
left in the third period.  Once again New Jersey responded,
closing to 71-70 on Van Horn's foul shot with 25 seconds to play
in the period. 


Gill added 11 points for the Nets, who shot 49 percent
