Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 24 of his season-high 34 points in the first half against his former team as the Miami Heat crushed the Dallas Mavericks, 128-105, for their 15th straight win in the series.
Mashburn netted 11 straight points for his team in the second quarter and 14 during a 19-4 run as Miami built a 66-42 cushion with 4:51 left in the first half.
With a new up-tempo offense, the normally defensive-minded Heat led 74-50 at halftime, falling two points shy of a franchise record for points after two quarters. Their 43 first-quarter points also were two points short of a team mark.
"It feels good. You don't have to run half-court offense all the time," Heat forward P.J. Brown said. "We don't have to struggle for baskets. Last year, there were times when we struggled for points. A couple of rule changes have made the game a lot more fun."
Alonzo Mourning scored 18 points, Tim Hardaway chipped in 10 and Brown totaled 15 and 11 rebounds for Miami, which shot 61 percent (27-of-44) from the field in the first half.
"From the get-go, our offense took advantage of switches, traps and mismatches," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We got easy layups and post-up points."
Rookie Anthony Carter contributed six points and 10 assists in 20 minutes for the Heat, who recorded the 400th win in team history and have not lost to Dallas since December 10, 1991. They lead the all-time series, 17-9.
"We gave them opportunities and I'll take a lot of the blame on that, playing all the double teams," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They made every shot and took advantage of every mistake. They took advantage of the way we were playing."
Dirk Nowitzki scored a season-high 23 points for the Mavericks, who have lost three in a row after a 2-1 start. They suffered their 18th consecutive loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
Mashburn, the fourth overall pick by Dallas in 1993, was on fire in the second quarter. He hit a pair of free throws, a layup and a 3-pointer to increase a nine-point lead to 54-38.
After a layup by Cedric Ceballos, Mashburn sank one as he capped a run of 11 consecutive points for the Heat. He also hit a short jumper shortly before the 19-4 burst.
"I've been hotter and scored less points," Mashburn said. "When you play basketball and you're hot, you try to experiment and do certain things. I didn't feel that I was in a zone. I was just fortunate."
Mashburn and Mourning combined to hit 15-of-23 shots in the first half, Miami's second-most prolific next to a 75-point effort against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 19, 1997.
Voshon Lenard added 13 points off the bench for the Heat, who sank several easy baskets and ended up shooting 56 percent (49-of-88). They also hit 19-of-22 free throws and outrebounded Dallas, 54-33.
"If we can continue to create opportunities by rebounding and running, we will be all right," Riley said. "We will continue to try and run. But some teams will not let you. We will be fine if we can execute against the teams who will not let us run."
Nowitzki fell nine points shy of a career high, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and 9-of-11 from the line. He also added nine rebounds in 40 minutes.
"It was a pretty good game. Still I've got to finish off, though," Nowitzki said. "I missed two layups."
Erick Strickland scored 15 points and Robert Pack and Hubert Davis each added 13 for the Mavericks, who shot 41 percent (40-of-97) from the field. They trailed by at least 16 points after the 19-4 run.
