Game Story
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Penny Hardaway scored 25 points and Tom Gugliotta added 18 as the Phoenix Suns got off to a quick start and raced to their fourth straight victory, 104-89 over the struggling New Jersey Nets.
Phoenix led 33-16 after one period and opened a 75-46 advantage in the third quarter. New Jersey cut the deficit to 89-77 with 6:07 left on a layup by Jim McIlvaine but could not get any closer.
The Suns dominated inside, outscoring New Jersey 56-36 in the paint and holding a 53-41 rebounding edge. Phoenix (4-1) is off to its best start since going 6-1 at the outset of the 1997-98 season.
Stephon Marbury scored 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting and Johnny Newman added 26 off the bench for New Jersey, which shot 38 percent (32-of-84) from the field and has started 1-4 for the second straight season.
After the game, some verbal jousting took place among Hardaway, Kidd and Marbury, which was instigated when Marbury did not shake hands with Hardaway prior to the opening tip.
"Earlier in the first half when Jason got two fouls I heard him (Marbury) say something about he didn't want to guard him, like he got two fouls on purpose, so he could leave the game," said Hardaway. "At the end of the game, he said something like my game is garbage. He said that to Jason, he didn't say it to me. He's just frustrated. I just told him, `I'll see you in Phoenix.'"
Kidd also did not take too kindly to Marbury's trash-talking.
"I've learned that from the best in (Seattle guard) Gary Payton," he said. "Nothing against Gary, but Gary's probably the best talker in the game. And Stephon has now taken hold of that aspect of the game and trying to get himself going. But he's barking up the wrong tree when he talks about myself and Penny. Me and Penny are old enough to understand it's not the words. It's a matter of going out there playing."
Marbury was on the defensive when asked about his pre- and post-game behavior.
"I disrespected him (Hardaway). I didn't shake his hand before the game," he said. "Listen, man, I've got no time to answer questions like that. Michael Jordan comes on the court and I don't see him say nothing to nobody. If I've got to shake his hand to show that I respect him, then he won't never have my respect."
Hardaway scored 11 points in the first quarter, including nine in a 24-8 run to end the period. The Suns shot a blistering 62 percent (13-of-21) in the first period, while the Nets were a dismal 32 percent (7-of-22) and committed four turnovers.
Cliff Robinson scored all 10 of his points in the second period, including eight straight, as the Suns opened a 24-point lead before entering the intermission with a 56-36 lead.
Phoenix outscored New Jersey, 19-10, to start the third quarter as Gugliotta tallied six points, Hardaway had five and Kidd four. Kidd's 15-foot jumper gave Phoenix a 75-46 lead with 4:44 left in the period.
Hardaway was 10-of-15 from the field and also had five assists and four steals. Kidd shot just 7-of-18 but scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. The backcourt tandem remained unbeaten after Hardaway missed the season opener due to a one-game suspension for fighting.
Luc Longley and rookie Shawn Marion added 10 points each as all five Phoenix starters scored in double figures.
New Jersey's starters shot just 34 percent (20-for-58). Keith Van Horn shot 4-for-10, Kendall Gill 1-for-8 and Scott Burrell 2-of-12.
