Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Led by Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks closed out the Golden State Warriors' home opener in a hurry.
Nowitzki scored 11 of his 20 points in a huge first quarter and the Mavericks defeated the winless Warriors for the second time this season, 120-97.
Michael Finley scored 23 points and Cedric Ceballos added 22 for the Mavericks (2-1), who defeated Golden State, 108-96, in their season opener.
Dallas wasted no time spoiling the Warriors' home opener as it raced to a 34-18 first-quarter lead and never looking back.
"We were really clicking in the open court offensively and we did a lot of things and finished the shot at the basket tonight," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "It really made for an easier night for us and we're very grateful for the win."
Antawn Jamison and Chris Mills scored 21 points apiece for the Warriors (0-3), who have lost their three games by an average of 19.3 points.
"We've got a lot of work to do," said Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo, whose froncourt has been banged up since the start of the preseason. "We played poorly and Dallas played well. You can't have a four-week preseason and have critical guys miss as many practices and games and try and come out and play."
Nowitzki had a basket in a 9-0 spurt that gave Dallas the lead for good. Erick Strickland's three-point play made it 17-10 with 6:07 remaining and the Mavericks were off and running.
Nowitzki answered a jumper by Jamison with two of his own to extend the lead to nine points. A layup and two free throws by Ceballos made it 27-14 and Nowitzki closed the quarter with a 3-pointer for a 16-point bulge.
"We wanted to generate some energy," said Mavericks gurd Robert Pack, who had 12 points, eight assists and four steals. "We knew it was their home opener. They were going to come in with a lot of energy. We wanted to match that. We were able to get out in the first half and get some easy baskets and get a lead we were able to hold onto."
Golden State shot just 28 percent (9-of-32) in the first quarter and was not much better in the second period. The Warriors cut the deficit to eight points before the Mavs built a 64-43 halftime cushion. Finley scored 10 points and Ceballos eight in the quarter.
Finley's 3-pointer with 6:12 left in the third quarter gave the Mavs their largest lead at 83-55 and the Warriors got no closer than 17 thereafter.
"Of course they're beat up and banged up and the guys that are out there aren't healthy and we know the problem they're having," Nelson said. "We have the same problem. Fortunately, our guys all kind of got healthy the last week and were able to play. But we're still limping around a little bit."
Shawn Bradley also had a fine all-around game for Dallas, which shot 51 percent (45-of-89) and made 23-of-26 free throws. The 7-6 center had 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.
Donyell Marshall had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Golden State, which shot just 36 percent (38-of-106) and held a 59-44 edge on the glass. Jamison grabbed 10 rebounds.
"I don't make excuses," Jamison said. "We haven't had guys into practice a lot. We haven't had a lot of guys to get into the repetition we need to get. (But) you still have five guys out on the court and they can put out a better effort than we have the last three games. We are out of sync. We don't have the energy we know we normally have."
"I sense that we care," Carlesimo added. "I sense that we are trying. We are clearly a half-step slow. We are like a fighter that's back on his heels. We are still marching, we are still banging, but we are not sharp."
