Game Story
ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Rookie Andre Miller picked up the
slack for struggling superstar Shawn Kemp and the Cleveland
Cavaliers held the Orlando Magic without a basket for the final
six minutes in a 104-99 victory.
Miller, the eighth overall pick in the draft, had a superb game
off the bench, collecting 18 points and seven assists. He was
8-of-9 from the field and had consecutive baskets in Cleveland's
closing 19-6 run.
Kemp missed eight of his first nine shots before snapping out of
it midway through the final period with two straight hoops in
the surge. He scored just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting but
did pull down 10 rebounds.
"They played really good defense out there and I missed some
shots but I don't care about that as long as we win," Kemp said.
"You're not going to shoot the ball great every night,
especially getting double- and triple-teamed."
"So often we see stars on a team having a tough night and
continuing to try to force it," said Cavaliers coach Randy
Wittman, who used a three-guard lineup at times. "Shawn went on
when he had his opportunities. When they double-teamed him, he
popped it out."
Orlando (1-2) held an 88-76 lead with 9:23 to play and still had
a 93-85 advantage on Pat Garrity's inside basket with 5:53 left.
But the Magic, whose revamped roster does not have a dominant
offensive player, managed just six foul shots and four turnovers
thereafter.
"One of my fears was that I wouldn't pick the right guy," Magic
coach Doc Rivers said. "The challenge is to pick the right guy.
Looking at this team, it's not easy to choose."
Brevin Knight also had 18 points and seven assists for the Cavs
(2-1), who despite Kemp's struggles shot 49 percent (44-of-90)
from the field and had five players in double figures.
"Andre Miller, Trajan Langdon and Bob Sura were all playing
well, so it was a good move to play all of them together," said
Knight.
Chris Gatling scored 21 points and Darrell Armstrong and Tariq
Abdul-Wahad added 20 apiece for the Magic, who shot less than 39
percent (37-of-95). All three came up short in the closing
seconds.
"I take the blame for that because I make this team go," said
Armstrong, the point guard. "I didn't make them go the last six
minutes of the game."
"I guess it showed a lack of experience towards the end," said
Abdul-Wahad. "How to deal with it, end-of-game situations."
Kemp's two baskets cut the 93-85 deficit in half and Miller hit
a floater and a layup off a feed from fellow rookie Langdon to
make it 97-95 with 3:08 remaining. A 3-pointer by Sura, who
scored 13 points, gave Cleveland the lead for good with 2:25 to
go.
"That was a huge shot," Sura said. "We were fighting hard all
night to stay in the game and we didn't play our best game but
we came out with a win."
Danny Ferry, who scored 16 points, added a jumper 44 seconds
later to push the lead to four points and the Cavs held on as
the Magic could not find anyone to make a shot. Abdul-Wahad
missed a jumper, Gatling missed two hook shots, Armstrong had an
offensive foul and Pat Garrity missed a 15-footer with seven
seconds left.
"I wanted to go with a shooter, because we kept going into the
paint a lot," Rivers said. "I think that shot was the shot we
were looking for anyway."
Ferry scored 12 points and Knight 11 as Cleveland opened a 56-49
halftime lead. Armstrong scored 11 points in the third period
as Orlando rallied for an 80-74 lead entering the final quarter.
The game was a meeting of rookie coaches Wittman and Rivers, who
once were teammates on the Atlanta Hawks.
"Doc and I are great friends," Wittman said. "It's always a
little tough doing it; it goes down to the wire and one of us
has to lose."
