Game Story


EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The NBA team featuring
several budding young stars and a few solid veterans that was
strutting its stuff at Continental Airlines Arena was not the
New Jersey Nets. 


As the New Jersey faithful looked on in dismay, reigning Rookie
of the Year Vince Carter scored 26 points in 29 minutes to lead
the promising Toronto Raptors to a 112-92 thrashing of the
already struggling Nets. 


Carter was 11-of-17 from the floor and dazzled the disappointed
crowd with several highlight reel layups and dunks while helping
his club post its second straight victory.  Backcourt mate Doug
Christie, who averaged 24 points in Toronto's first two games,
collected 12 and nine rebounds tonight. 


"We were just executing and when you execute, someone is going
to be open," Carter said.  "I was open, the guys were open and
it makes the game easier when you run the plays correctly and
play defense." 


Fifteen-year veteran Kevin Willis scored six of his 20 points
off the bench to begin the second quarter as the Raptors (2-1)
opened a 41-29 cushion and never looked back. 


"We have a lot of young talent and the roles aren't totally
defined or understood," Willis said.  "The key thing is the
defense. You play good team defense and once that happens, the
offense takes care of itself.  We have enough offensive
players." 


"We didn't have to extend guys tonight," Toronto coach Butch
Carter added. "Maybe we are jelling as a team.  But last year we
were 18-12 and we took that for granted." 


It appears to be getting late very early for New Jersey, which
suffered through a dismal 16-34 campaign last year after being
touted as a sure playoff contender. 


"I think psychologically, for whatever reason, this is not a
relaxed team," New Jersey coach Don Casey said.  "Our goal now
is to re-establish ourselves from square one." 


"I told the players to get disappointed," he added.  "But you
can't get despondent.  They're clearly out of sync.  That's our
job, my job, to get them back into sync.  Worry is not a good
word. I think concern, yes, deep concern." 


Stephon Marbury continued to ignore his point guard duties in
pursuit of points.  He scored 25 points on 10-of-26 shooting,
handing out only three assists to go with three turnovers.
Marbury has taken a whopping 85 shots in New Jersey's three
losses. 


"We can't put all the scoring on Steph," Nets guard Kendall Gill
said. "Somebody else has got to do it too.  I blame myself for
that.  Also, defensively, I wasn't myself tonight either.  I
feel terrible right now. Tonight was very bad.  This was one of
the worst losses since I've been here. Maybe this will serve a
purpose and get us going to play harder." 


Crowd favorite Gheorghe Muresan drew the biggest cheers as the
7-7 center scored nine points during garbage time, which began
in the third quarter.  The Nets have lost their opening three
games for the third time in six seasons. 


"The good thing is that Gheorghe got everyone excited, including
us," Casey said. 


Toronto took an 8-7 lead in the all-time series, giving it more
victories against the Nets than any other franchise. 


Carter's thunderous dunk with 6:51 remaining in the third
quarter gave Toronto a 75-55 lead, but New Jersey showed some
life by responding with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 77-62. 


The Raptors once again took the game by the throat, reeling off
the next seven points.  Carter capped the burst with another
slam to make it 84-62 with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter. 


Second-year forward Tracy McGrady had 16 points, nine rebounds
and four assists for Toronto, which shot 51 percent (44-of-87)
and held a commanding 52-38 advantage on the boards. 


"Guys have got to realize they will not get the minutes they
always want," said Raptors veteran forward Charles Oakley, who
grabbed nine boards.  "But as long as we win, it is all fun and
joy. We've got a lot of weapons.  Our defense leads our offense
and we need the deep bench because of the rule changes." 


Lucious Harris collected 19 points off the bench and Keith Van
Horn added 16 and eight rebounds for the Nets, who committed
only nine turnovers but shot just 38 percent (34-of-89). 


New Jersey center Jamie Feick played despite a broken nose,
collecting nine points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes.  But
Feick questioned the effort put forward by the rest of his
teammates. 


"We've got to talk and have a long meeting (Saturday) to figure
out what's wrong," he said.  "We have played three tough teams;
Toronto is a tough team. They have scorers and big, strong guys
inside. Last year, we played with energy and passion and dove
around for balls.  This year we're missing something and we've
got to figure it out."
