Game Story
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The last time the Miami Heat visited the
United Center, they handed the Chicago Bulls one of the most
humiliating defeats in NBA history. Tonight, they settled for
handing the Bulls a sound beating.
Voshon Lenard scored 22 points and Jamal Mashburn added 21 as
Miami pulled away early and never looked back, cruising to a
105-87 rout over winless Chicago.
Chicago suffered an embarrassing 92-49 home loss Miami on April
10. The Bulls became the first team in the shot-clock era to
score less than 50 points and did not seem any more worthy of
sharing the court with Miami tonight.
Alonzo Mourning scored six of his 15 points as the Heat raced to
an 18-4 lead in the first five minutes. Mashburn, who was
8-of-13 from the floor, had nine points in the second period to
give the Heat a 55-32 advantage at the half.
"I thought we really came to play tonight," Miami coach Pat
Riley said. "We played extremely well in the first half, but in
the second we reverted to some bad habits. However, we did the
things we wanted and got the `W'."
"We were coming off a rough loss to Toronto (on Thursday),"
Mourning added. "We knew we were a better team than we showed
and we just wanted to get a `W.' We came out tonight to try to
take them out quick."
Lenard sank 8-of-11 shots and scored 17 points after the break,
helping keep the Bulls buried.
"It was a good game for Voshon," Riley added. "Coming off the
bench is not the easiest thing to do. We want him to come out
aggressive and have the guys looking for him. He doesn't need a
lot of room once he gets on a roll."
Chicago's Toni Kukoc, one of the few holdovers from the Bulls'
dynasty, bounced back from a dreadful 1-of-14 performance
against New York on Wednesday. He scored 25 points on 8-of-15
shooting but was the only Chicago starter in double figures.
"On the bright side, Toni got it going with his shot," Chicago
coach Tim Floyd said. "We have to put this one behind us and
get ready for (Saturday at Atlanta)."
Fred Hoiberg scored 11 points and Dedric Willoughby added 10 for
the Bulls, who shot 39 percent (30-of-78) and yielded 24 points
off turnovers. Chicago shot just 23 percent (18-of-77),
including 0-of-9 from beyond the arc in the April 10 debacle.
Tim Hardaway had 11 points and handed out six assists for Miami,
which shot 51 percent (36-of-71) and held a 41-38 advantage on
the boards.
"It seems strange coming in here without some of the fans and
excitement," Hardaway said. "(The Bulls) are an NBA team but
really don't know what they're doing yet. It's hard to gauge
where we're at against them. We'll know more next week when we
see what we do against Indiana, Washington and New York."
Rookie and No. 1 overall pick Elton Brand and Dickey Simpkins
each made a free throw to give Chicago its first and only lead
of the night, 2-0, with 10:42 remaining in the opening quarter.
"I'm more upset about the outcome of the game," Simpkins said.
"I guess we have to fight through our inconsistencies. We have
a disadvantage until we can execute offensively and
defensively."
Hardaway hit a technical foul shot, Mourning made a layup and
quickly converted a turnover by Hersey Hawkins to make it 5-2
with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.
Mourning, who had 10 points in the period, made a pair of free
throws to give Miami a 16-4 cushion before Mashburn made a layup
to give the Heat a 14-point bulge.
Kukoc drained a 3-pointer to spark an 8-2 run, but Mourning
quickly answered with a 14-footer before Hardaway's layup and
Dan Majerle's 3-pointer made it 27-12 with 3:33 remaining in the
first quarter.
Brand had a rough night, scoring four points and grabbing six
rebounds in 26 minutes.
"It's too early to get frustrated," Brand said. "We have
another game to play (Saturday). You have to learn from these
games, go watch tapes and see what you did wrong. It was a
rough game. We got down early and they are a good team. They
pounced on us."
