Game Story
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers could not have
asked for a better opponent in their first regular-season game
at the Staples Center.
Shaquille O'Neal scored 28 points, including six during a
decisive run to open the second half as the Lakers posted their
15th win in 16 all-time meetings with the Vancouver Grizzlies, a
103-88 triumph in their state-of-the-art arena.
O'Neal was 13-of-22 from the floor, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked
three shots and capped a 17-6 run on a layup with 7:11 remaining
in the third quarter to give Los Angeles a 66-53 lead. The
Lakers held a 49-48 lead in the half before O'Neal sparked the
big burst with a 10-footer and a thunderous dunk.
The $350 million building was not sold out but the crowd did
respond to the Lakers' spirited play in the second half. Dubbed
"the entertainment capital of the entertainment capital," the
facility seats 20,000, with one-third of the seats above the
scoreboard, and there were 18,997 on hand.
"I'm one that wants the fans to be more rowdy," O'Neal said. "We
have to also get them rowdy -- it's a two-way street. Nice
building, well put together. I see they're making their money
back, charging $12.50 for parking."
"It's not bad shooting in this building at all," Lakers guard
Ron Harper added.
New acquisition Michael Dickerson and budding star Shareef
Abdur-Rahim scored 19 points apiece for the Grizzlies, whose
lone win against Los Angeles came on February 23 -- the final
game coached by Del Harris before he was fired.
The Grizzlies continued their road futility, suffering their
24th consecutive loss dating to a 93-89 double-overtime triumph
against the Los Angeles Clippers on February 16.
"We just need to win," Abdur-Rahim said. "I think winning cures
all. I think we came out these first two games with the
mentality of trying to win. We fell short, but we'll keep after
it. It's a long season."
New Lakers coach Phil Jackson improved to 2-0 and got another
solid effort from sharpshooter Glen Rice, who scored 28 points
in Tuesday's season-opening win at Utah. Rice did not have any
trouble with the backdrop at the Staples Center, making 8-of-13
shots and scoring 17 points.
Rick Fox had a hot hand off the bench for Los Angeles, scoring
15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. A.C. Green and Brian Shaw
collected 10 points apiece for the Lakers, who shot 51 percent
(46-of-91) and held a 47-40 advantage on the boards.
"It's going to be a strange place to play for a while, we knew
that," Jackson said. "Even though we shot 50 percent, which is
great, there's still a certain feel about that building that's a
little bit different. The open space and that idea that there
were some balls looking like long flies in the outfield."
"We've been more of an attacking unit now that we have settled
in," Fox added. "We understand more of what we are supposed to
do in our offense instead of just standing around waiting for
offense to open up."
Abdur-Rahim made only 5-of-19 shots from the field, but did
connect on 9-of-13 free throws while handing out 11 assists.
"I just think I missed shots that I usually make," he said. "But
I wouldn't say I was forced to take bad shots."
Othella Harrington scored 13 points and Bryant Reeves and Felipe
Lopez added 11 apiece for the Grizzlies, who shot 41 percent
(30-of-73) and yielded 24 points off turnovers.
"I'm confident the team will come back," Vancouver coach Brian
Hill said. "The guys have to understand the caliber of the
teams they are playing. I told the guys we've got 80 games left
and that's something I couldn't say last year."
Abdur-Rahim gave the Grizzlies their final lead of the night,
48-47, with 39 seconds left in the second quarter, but O'Neal
put Los Angeles up for good with a six-foot hook shot with 22
seconds remaining.
Derek Fisher hit a 20-footer to open the second-half scoring,
Rice sank a 19-footer and O'Neal's 10-foot hook made it 55-50
with 10:02 left in the third quarter.
