Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers opened the
Phil Jackson era with a 91-84 victory over the Utah Jazz as Glen
Rice and Shaquille O'Neal combined for 51 points.
After guiding the Chicago Bulls to six titles with the help of
superstars Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Jackson will try
and turn around the underachieving Lakers, who are a preseason
favorite for the Western Conference title seemingly every season
but always seem to come up short.
Trying to install his triangle offense, Jackson watched his new
team blow a 10-point third-quarter lead but prevail after Rice
emerged from his preseason slump to scored 12 of his 28 points
in the fourth quarter.
Rice was 0-for-10 with no points in Los Angeles' final preseason
game on Thursday, a 92-76 loss to Utah. O'Neal added 23 points
and 13 rebounds and Derek Fisher tallied 12 as the Lakers did
just fine without star guard Kobe Bryant, who is out with a
broken hand.
"I realized last time against this team I went 0-for-10. I had
a lot of good shots that didn't go in," Rice said. "I figured
coming into tonight I would have the opportunity again and I
wanted to capitalize."
"My teammates hit some big shots and we played some good
defense," O'Neal said. "Before the game I pulled Glen aside and
told him I needed 20-25 points and he played well. We all
played well. But we're happy. We're 1-0 and we came out of
this building with a win."
Jeff Hornacek scored 23 points and John Stockton contributed 15
and eight assists for the Jazz, who suffered their first opening
night loss in six seasons.
"I think we have to be smarter," Stockton said. "I thought the
guys were trying hard, and that goes for everybody. But we
weren't very smart about how we helped and where it came from
and that's something that we've been very good at. But it's
early in the season, and we have to relearn it."
Los Angeles held the largest lead of the game for the final time
at 54-44 with 8:39 remaining in the third quarter before being
outscored 15-9 the rest of the quarter.
Rice's 3-pointer with 11:10 left pushed the advantage to 66-59
but Stockton led an 8-0 run with six points, including a jump
shot from the left baseline that gave the Jazz a one-point lead.
After several lead changes, Utah grabbed its last advantage at
74-72 with 5:18 remaining as Stockton scored on a running
basket.
However, the Lakers settled down and showed more patience with
Jackson's triangle offense. They put together a 8-2 spurt,
started by O'Neal's three-point play with 5:06 left and ending
with a 3-pointer by Rice a little more than two minutes later.
"I'm pleased about the way we performed down the stretch," said
Jackson. "Both teams looked like the were both thumbing around
out there, they weren't in condition to play this game. I
thought the game was obviously one of those early ones that you
wave off later in the season."
Although Stocketon's 20-foot jumper moved the Jazz within 84-82
with one minute remaining, Los Angeles scored the next nine
points to close out the win.
Derek Fisher chipped in with 12 points and seven assists for the
Lakers, who shot 43 percent (33-for-76) from the field,
including 8-for-13 from 3-point range, and held a 45-38
advantage on the boards.
"We had some big shots, they were trying to drop off the
shooters and cover Shaq, and the corners were wide open,"
Jackson said. "Rice hit a big 3, we were fortunate to shoot well
from the 3-point line tonight, that was about the only thing
that was done well tonight."
Karl Malone was held to 14 points and five rebounds while Greg
Ostertag collected seven and seven for Utah, which shot 43.3
percent.
