Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 30 points and Walter McCarty made 6-of-6 3-pointers off the bench as the Boston Celtics surprised the Toronto Raptors, 103-90, in the season opener for both teams.
Pierce made 12-of-19 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and fell one short of his career high set in a 107-96 victory at Miami on April 29.
The second-year guard, who finished second to Toronto's Vince Carter in 1999 Rookie of the Year voting, also had eight rebounds and five assists for Boston, which opened last season with a 103-92 home loss to the Raptors.
"I wanted to come out and be aggressive," said Pierce. "I want to be agressive from the start and give our team some momentum. "I hadn't played well up here. I think I kind of fired us up and we got the momentum and never looked back."
"Pierce was ready to play," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "He still remembers taking the heat for finishing second behind Vince last year. He worked hard all summer and is vastly improved."
McCarty scored 20 points, missing just one floor shot and making both of his free throws. Antoine Walker had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics, who shot 52 percent (38-for-73) from the field and never trailed.
Doug Christie scored 20 points and Alvin Williams added 13 for Toronto, which won two of three meetings from Boston in last season's lockout-shortened campaign. Carter was held to 12 points on just 3-of-10 shooting. He hit only 1-of-5 3-pointers as Toronto shot just 23 percent (3-for-13) from behind the arc.
"We just wanted to trap Vince and take him out of the game," Walker said. "We had them puzzled and they turned it over and we got on the break. Paul played terrific tonight, he carried the load in the first half offensively."
Center Antonio Davis, Toronto's biggest offseason acquisition, had just eight points and three rebounds. The Raptors were outscored, 40-26, in the paint.
"We weren't playing well as a team," Davis said. "There are a lot of new faces and it may take a while. We expect a lot from each other and we have to try not to get down. Until we get the job done in the paint it's going to be a long season, but I have confidence that we can turn it around and open things up for our scorers."
Rookie forward Adrian Griffin contributed 14 points and seven assists for the Boston, which employed more of a half-court offense rather than the trapping style that coach Rick Pitino often favors. The 6-5 Griffin gives the Celtics a smaller starting five, but Boston outrebounded Toronto, 39-36.
Pierce made 6-of-9 shots and scored 11 points as Boston jumped out to a 27-17 advantage after the first period.
Kevin Willis, who had five points and seven rebounds, hit a short hook shot to cap a 9-2 burst and pull the Raptors within 37-34 with 5 1/2 to go in the second quarter. But Tony Battie answered with a hook shot 1:27 later to trigger an 11-2 surge. Pierce had a pair of baskets in the run that was capped by Griffin's dunk for a 48-36 lead 1:40 before halftime.
Toronto cut the deficit to 53-49 when Charles Oakley made a 21-footer with 9:12 to go in the third period. But the Raptors came no closer as Pierce responded with a 3-pointer from the right corner 58 seconds later.
Boston took a 79-65 lead into the final period and had its biggest cushion when McCarty's 3-pointer from the left sideline made it 87-67 with 7:49 remaining.
