Game Story
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs made sure
they can turn the playoffs into the Alamo for the rest of the
NBA.
The Spurs clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs
as Tim Duncan scored 28 points and David Robinson added 23 for
an 88-81 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
San Antonio erased an early fourth-quarter deficit to finish
37-13 and tie Utah atop the Midwest Division. The Spurs went
2-1 against the Jazz this season to gain the tiebreaker edge for
the league's best record.
"What we've accomplished is pretty significant condsidering
where we came from," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich.
"They deserve a lot of credit for being disciplined enough to
stay in the program day after day."
San Antonio, which is 21-4 with 13 straight wins at its home
court of the Alamodome, will face the Minnesota Timberwolves in
the first round of the playoffs. It won 19 of its last 22
overall and went 31-5 since a 6-8 start.
"I feel good about our matchup with Minnesota," said San Antonio
forward Mario Elie. "When they lost Stephon Marbury, they lost
a little edge and I feel good about playing them."
The Spurs went on a 24-9 run in the fourth quarter to ensure
their fifth straight victory. Avery Johnson put San Antonio in
front with a jumper to make the score 68-67 with 7:54 remaining.
Duncan keyed the spurt with 10 points.
"It's kind of a shock where we started to where we are now,"
said Duncan. "I wouldn't say they are only two leaders on this
team. Dave (Robinson) and I are leaders on the floor. Mario's
(Elie) our fire, Avery's (Johnson) our plug, that's why we are
where we are."
Duncan put the Spurs ahead for good on a 14-foot jumper, 72-71,
with 5:55 to play.
Robinson grabbed 20 rebounds for San Antonio and Duncan added
10.
"I still feel Utah is the team we have to get over because
they're so experienced and so good," said Robinson. "We knew it
was all in our hands. We had to do it all ouselves, but wow,
it's one of those thing you build over an entire season. We're
really solid right now and I feel really good going into the
playoffs."
San Antonio led 54-37 at halftime. Golden State outscored the
Spurs, 26-16 in the third quarter to take a 63-60 advantage.
The Spurs' only other regular-season title came in 1995, when
they won 22 of their last 25 to finish 62-20 but lost to
eventual NBA champion Houston in the conference finals.
"We're primed to win a championship," added Elie. "I'm starting
to get that feeling I got when I was in Houston. "In 15 games
we're the world champs and I think we took the first step by
getting home court throught the playoffs."
Rookie Antawn Jamison paced Golden State with 22 points and 16
rebounds, while Donyell Marshall added 14. The Warriors ended
the season by losing four of their last five but finished 21-29,
collecting two more wins than they did in last season's 82-game
slate.
Jamison collected his seventh double-double of the season, tying
Michael Olowokandi of the Los Angeles Clippers for the lead
among rookies.
"I know what I got to do. I know what I need to work on," said
Jamison. "I know how to play in this league and I think it is
good that I struggled a lot this year and experienced a lot of
lows."
Even with the loss, the Warriors wound up with a 13-12 record at
home, their first winning record at the Oakland Coliseum since
posting a 23-18 mark in 1995-96.
San Antonio swept the three-game season series.
