Game Story
INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers notched the second Central Division title in franchise history but also had to settle for the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
Minutes after their hopes for the conference crown ended, the Indiana Pacers closed their regular season with a meaningless 100-78 victory over the shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers.
Reggie Miller scored 10 of his 24 points in the first quarter as the Pacers took control early, tuning up for the playoffs with their fourth straight win and ending the regular season with a 33-17 record.
"Defense and just coming out and playing hard have been the keys the last four games," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "I'd like to have three or four more games to get ready for the playoffs. The last four games have been awfully good."
It was the last regular-season game at Market Square Arena for Indiana, which will move into Conseco Fieldhouse for the 1999-2000 campaign.
The Pacers recorded their only other division title in the 1994-95 season, going on to lose a seven-game series against the Orlando Magic in the conference finals. They will be the East's second seed in the playoffs.
"We got one of our goals, but we didn't get the best overall record and that bothers me," Bird added.
Favored by many to win the East heading into the season, Indiana lost its chance at the conference title earlier tonight as the Miami Heat (33-16) defeated the Atlanta Hawks. The Pacers, who are 2 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the Central, needed Miami to lose each of its last two games to win the East.
Miller and Sixth Man of the Year candidate Jalen Rose keyed an 18-2 burst in the first quarter that put the Pacers in command and the Cavaliers never recovered. After starter Chris Mullin picked up two early fouls, Rose came off the bench to trigger the pivotal run. With Cleveland leading 11-4, Rose buried a 17-footer and hit a layup off a steal by Miller.
Rik Smits had a layup and jumper around Miller's 17-footer as Indiana took the lead for good. Miller and Mark Jackson drained back-to-back 3-pointers to cap the tear, giving the Pacers a 22-13 advantage with 2:57 left. Miller added another 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining as Indiana grabbed a 29-17 cushion.
"We are about to begin our second season and the last (four) games indicated that we are ready to make the move," Rose said. "We wanted to be the best and we didn't quite get there, but we are champions of the Central Divsion."
The Cavaliers (22-27) got no closer than seven points in the final three quarters, suffering their ninth loss in 10 games. Their season comes to an end Wednesday in Toronto.
Cleveland was already playing without a pair of starters with star forward Shawn Kemp and point guard Brevin Knight sidelined due to injury. Guard Derek Anderson sat out due to the flu and starting shooting guard Wesley Person left in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle.
"We were outmatched the whole evening," said Cavs forward Danny Ferry. "For us to win, things have to go extremely well for us and things things had to go bad for them. ... Losing two guys tonight was frustrating. The guys out there competed hard."
Rose contributed 16 points and all 12 players scored for the Pacers, whose bench outscored the Cavs' reserves, 47-33. Indiana also handed out 26 assists, including seven by Mark Jackson, while Cleveland had just 11.
"The Pacers have two starting teams in reality," said Cavaliers guard Mitchell Butler. "Everyone on their team knows their roles. The Pacers are a model for other NBA franchises to pattern themselves after."
A short jumper by Butler, who paced Cleveland with 19 points off the bench, cut the deficit to 38-31 with 4:47 left in the second quarter. Indiana answered with seven straight points as Travis Best buried a jumper, Derrick McKey converted a three-point play and Smits hit from inside for a 45-31 cushion.
The Pacers took a 50-39 halftime lead, but again saw their advantage cut under double digits midway through the third. This time Miller had the answer after Cleveland pulled within 58-50. He scored nine points over the final 5:10 of the period, helping Indiana build a 76-60 lead.
All five starters sat the fourth quarter as the Pacers cruised, completing a three-game season series sweep of the Cavaliers.
"It is a good thing to hang up another Central Division banner, but we are not done yet," Jackson said. "We must continue until we get where we want to be. We have the loudest and the best sixth man in the NBA (the home crowd) and we'd certainly like to reward them with an NBA championship."
Smits scored 14 points and Best chipped in 11 for Indiana, which made 22-of-25 free throws and held a 37-27 edge on the boards. Antonio Davis and Sam Perkins each grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.
Bob Sura registered 16 points and Cedric Henderson contributed 14 as the Cavs endured their fifth straight road loss.
