Game Story
SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- One down, three to go.
The San Antonio Spurs took the first step in a difficult trip to
the top of the Western Conference with a 98-90 victory over the
Portland Trail Blazers, surviving Damon Stoudamire's tying
18-footer at the regulation buzzer and riding six overtime
points from Tim Duncan.
The Spurs (34-13) caught the Trail Blazers for the second-best
record in the West. They are 1 1/2 games behind Utah (36-12),
which visits Sunday afternoon, and close the season with trips
to Portland and Golden State.
"This team knew that Portland was still ahead of us, so this was
a huge win," Spurs center David Robinson said. "We couldn't
think of Utah. Now we have a little time to celebrate, but we
have to play Utah in 24 hours."
"I don't have any concerns about tomorrow," Spurs coach Gregg
Popovich said. "If I did, they wouldn't matter anyway because we
still play tomorrow."
If San Antonio wins its remaining three games, it would secure
the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout
the playoffs. The Spurs have won 12 straight home games since a
loss to Toronto on March 26.
"We control our own destiny and that's a great situation to be
in," Duncan said. "It's in our hands and that's what we like."
"Mike (Portland coach Mike Dunleavy) and I spoke before the game
and all of us are going to beat each other up down the stretch
before the playoffs begin," Popovich said. "I just hope we have
five bodies left for tomorrow."
Portland gave this one away, then nearly took it back. The 5-11
Stoudamire scored his team's last six points of the fourth
quarter, including a jumper over Avery Johnson as time expired,
forging an 83-83 tie.
"We don't fear this team," Stoudamire said. "We've taken their
best shots and lost by one point and lost in overtime, both in
their place."
Limited to 13 points in regulation, Duncan took charge in the
extra session. He wrestled the ball away from Brian Grant and
scored inside to give the Spurs the lead for good with 3:39 to
go and added a jumper 49 seconds later.
After a drive by Johnson -- who had a season-high 24 points and
eight assists -- Duncan hit another short jumper for a 91-83
bulge with 1:46 left. It was at least a two-possession game
thereafter as Mario Elie made four free throws in the final 21
seconds to seal it.
Robinson had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Duncan added 19
and 12 for the Spurs, who overcame a 12-point second-quarter
deficit and won for the ninth time in 10 games. The inside play
of Robinson and Duncan helped foul out Grant and Blazers center
Arvydas Sabonis.
"Dave and Tim had terrific games as usual but this was a good
team effort against very talented, deep Portland team," Johnson
said.
Sabonis scored 14 points and Grant added 10 and 11 rebounds for
Portland, which wasted six double-figure scorers and dropped to
7-7 after a 27-6 start.
"We just did not make shots," Dunleavy said. "We got some good
looks, they just didn't go down. Both teams played physical and
we expect the same type of play when we face them again."
After a long scoreless drought by both teams, Jaren Jackson had
an inside basket that just beat the shot clock that gave the
Spurs a 78-74 lead with 3:05 to go. Rasheed Wallace made 1-of-2
foul shots and Jimmy Jackson scored on a drive, but Johnson had
a driving layup to give San Antonio an 80-77 advantage with 1:53
left.
After the teams swapped a pair of misses, Stoudamire took over.
He pushed the ball upcourt for a jumper with 36 seconds to go
and, after Robinson threw in a scoop layup, scored on a drive
with eight seconds left. Jackson gave Portland a chance when he
split a pair of free throws and Stoudamire tied it at the horn.
"It wasn't a completely clean look but it was clean enough and I
had to take it with so little time left," Stoudamire said. "But
it wasn't enough and it just prolonged the loss."
Elie and Jackson scored eight points apiece for the Spurs, who
shot 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field and made 30-of-38 free
throws.
Wallace and Walt Williams scored 13 points each and Stoudamire
added 12 for the Blazers, who shot 37 percent (35-of-94) and
made 16-of-24 from the line. Both teams grabbed 45 rebounds.
Portland controlled the first half. A layup by Sabonis provided
a 46-34 lead with 3:27 left in the second quarter before the
Blazers settled for a 51-43 halftime advantage.
San Antonio trailed 61-52 midway through the third period but
used a 16-7 run fueled by six points from Duncan to pull into a
68-68 tie late in the quarter.
