Game Story
CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Danny Ferry scored 18 points and Derek
Anderson added 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds as the
Cleveland Cavaliers stopped a season-high seven-game losing
streak with a 91-83 victory over the Toronto Raptors, the last
team they beat.
Cleveland had its flickering playoff hopes severely damaged when
starting point guard Brevin Knight broke his left hand and
leading scorer and rebounder Shawn Kemp went down with a
sprained left foot. One night after being officially ousted
from the postseason race, it won for the first time since a
91-90 overtime triumph at Toronto on April 16.
"We got a great effort from the guys tonight," said Cleveland
coach Mike Fratello. "The fact that they came back here in the
fourth game in five nights and were able to put a fourth quarter
together to finally enable us to win a game. There's not a guy
that really didn't come off to do something to really help us in
a positive way."
Andrew DeClercq had 13 points and seven rebounds and Wesley
Person added 11 points for the Cavaliers, who are are missing
the postseason for just the second time since 1991.
Vince Carter, the leading Rookie of the Year candidate, scored
25 points for the Raptors, who lost their fourth straight game
and fell to 4-11 all-time against the Cavaliers. Toronto
(22-25) will be eliminated from the playoffs with another loss
or a win by the New York Knicks (25-22), who are eighth in the
Eastern Conference.
"We go the points we usually score but we just didn't stop
anybody," Carter said. "They hit shots and got to some loose
balls. They got the job done and my hat's off to them. We are
just not getting the job done, plain and simple."
Cleveland never trailed and shot 48 percent (10-for-21) in the
first quarter for a 21-18 lead. The Cavaliers used a 9-3 burst
on 3-pointers by Mitchell Butler, Ferry and Anderson for a 48-39
cushion with 1:18 to go in the second quarter.
"My shot has felt good most of the year," said Ferry, who made
6-of-10 shots. "Even in the beginning when I wasn't shooting the
ball well. My knees have improved and it's been fun for us to
get to play. This team hasn't won a game for a while, we've
competed and finally had a chance to close it out."
The Cavaliers built the lead to 58-46 when Ferry made a
3-pointer with 7:19 left in the third period. But the Raptors
used a 7-0 spurt, cutting it to 60-55 on a driving layup by
Carter with 3:30 remaining.
Cleveland scored the first nine points of the fourth period and
took its biggest lead of the game, 78-63, on two free throws by
Cedric Henderson with 8:42 left.
