Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- While the Utah Jazz moved closer to
the best record in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors moved
further from qualifying for the playoffs.
Karl Malone scored 25 points and keyed a big third quarter as
the Jazz dealt the Warriors' fading postseason hopes another
blow with a 96-85 victory.
Malone scored eight points in a 23-7 surge over the final 9 1/2
minutes of the third quarter that gave Utah a comfortable 77-54
advantage. Malone finished 9-of-16 from the floor and also
handed out a season-high eight assists.
Howard Eisley came off the bench to score 14 points and John
Stockton collected nine and 10 assists for the Jazz, who moved a
half-game in front of the Portland Trail Blazers for the best
record in the league.
The Jazz swept four games from the Warriors this season and have
won 13 straight and 17 of the last 18 meetings between the teams
since suffering a 93-82 defeat at Golden State on April 14,
1996.
John Starks scored a season-high 27 points and Chris Mills added
23 for the Warriors (20-26), who fell three games behind
Minnesota for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.
Golden State, which has not made the playoffs since 1994, has
four games remaining, three on the road.
"It was a huge game for both of us," Golden State coach P.J.
Carlesimo said. "A huge game for them in terms of protecting
their home court, and a huge game for us in terms of our chance
to get into the playoffs."
Holding a 54-47 advantage with 9 1/2 minutes left in the third
quarter, the Jazz began to pull away. Malone scored four
straight points and Stockton converted a layup to trigger a 23-7
burst to close the period that pushed the lead to 23 entering
the final period.
"We've been struggling a little bit and it's nice to get a win,"
Malone said. "I still say we control our own destiny. If we do
what we're capable of doing, who knows what could happen on the
other end."
Utah outscored Golden State 26-12 in the third quarter and held
it to 33 percent shooting (5-of-16), forcing six turnovers.
With a 23-point cushion entering the final quarter, the Jazz
went to their reserves. But Starks ignited 22-8 spurt to open
the quarter with 12 points that brought the Warriors within
85-76 with 2:43 to play.
Starks and Mills were virtually the entire offense for Golden
State. Starks went 11-of-19 from the field and Mills connected
on 10-of-19 shots as the Warriors shot 46 percent (36-of-79).
"We fought till the very end," Mills said. "You know that's what
I like to see when a team goes out no matter what. We try to
hang in as much as possible. But the Jazz, you have to give them
credit. Their bench came in, they played well. The starters
played well and in the third quarter, they really stuck it to us
good."
The Jazz ran their offense almost to perfection in the first
half and looked nothing like a team that had lost four of their
last six games. They shot 59 percent (19-of-32) and held a 49-42
lead at intermission behind 15 points from Malone.
Bryon Russell and Jeff Hornacek added 10 points apiece for Utah,
which shot 56 percent (36-of-64) overall.
