Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill had 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Jerome Williams added 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 101-93 win over the New Jersey Nets.
Jerry Stackhouse scored 18 points off the bench and Joe Dumars added 15 on five third-quarter 3-pointers for Detroit, which moved within one-half game of idle Philadelphia for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
"He rebounded the ball and now he's starting to score for us, and that's a big bonus," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said of Williams. "Joe Dumars got us over the hump."
Bison Dele contributed 10 points as the Pistons shot 51 percent (40-for-78) from the field and outrebounded New Jersey, 41-33.
Kendall Gill scored 22 points and Stephon Marbury had 21 and 12 assists but shot just 7-for-21 as the Nets lost for the third time in four games. Kerry Kittles added 14 points and Jamie Feick 13 and 16 rebounds for New Jersey, which has not won in Detroit since February 5, 1994.
"There's no doubt we can use them, but we won't use that as an excuse," Feick said, referring to injured forwards Keith Van Horn and Jayson Williams and center Rony Seikaly. "We're going to play hard no matter what. We hung in there, it was a good game. Maybe we should have won. They've got a well-balanced team. I think that was the key to their victory."
Jud Buechler, who had eight points and five rebounds off the bench, made a 3-pointer to put the Pistons ahead for good, 84-81, with 9:39 to play. Williams hit a follow shot while falling out of bounds to make it 86-81 with 8:50 to play.
"They're not a bad team," Williams said of the Nets. "They don't have any big names but they play hard without their stars. I don't have a big name either, but I can play, too. We knew we had to lock it on in the fourth quarter -- no more easy shots, no more layups."
New Jersey stayed close and cut the deficit to 88-87 on a 19-footer by Kittles with 4:57 remaining. But Dele responded with a seven-footer 21 seconds later for a 90-87 advantage.
New Jersey had a chance to tie it after Dele's basket, but Marbury missed two free throws and Mark Hendrickson missed a follow shot. Hill sank a 15-footer to make it 92-78 with 4:02 remaining and hit a layup 45 seconds later. Buechler's 3-pointer capped a 9-0 burst for a 97-87 lead with 2:09 to go.
Kittles scored 12 points in the first half and the Nets shot 50 percent (22-for-44) to take a 50-46 lead into halftime.
They pushed the lead to 59-53 on a driving layup by Gill with 9:08 left in the third. Detroit closed within 61-60 when Hill dunked with 6:40 left, but New Jersey pushed the lead back to 68-60 on two free throws by Gill with 5:12 to go.
Dumars answered with a 3-pointer from the left sideline to spark a 7-0 surge and two free throws by Williams made it 68-67 with 4:06 remaining.
Detroit tied it at 78-78 when Williams rebounded a miss by Christian Laettner and made a layup with 18.2 seconds left in the third.
Stackhouse opened the final period with a driving layup to put the Pistons ahead, 80-78. New Jersey tied the game for the final time at 81-81 on a layup by Gill with 10:35 to go.
