Game Story
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson scored 14 of his 31
points in the fourth quarter as the Philadelphia 76ers clamped
down defensively and recorded their fifth straight victory,
80-71 over the undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers.
Iverson's 20-footer with 10:29 to play put Philadelphia ahead
for good, 63-61. He accounted for all of the Sixers' points in a
7-1 burst that extended the lead to 75-68 with 3:33 to go.
Philadelphia held Cleveland to 3-of-16 shooting and nine points
in the fourth quarter.
Theo Ratliff added 14 points for the 76ers, who have won 10 of
their last 13 games and assured themselves of a winning season
for the first time since 1990-91, when they went 44-38. That
also was the last time they made the playoffs.
Philadelphia moved within two games of idle Atlanta for fourth
place in the Eastern Conference.
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it," Iverson
said of the postseason. "I'm thinking about it but I'm not
concentrating on it. If we could get a 10-game win streak going
into the playoffs it would give us a lot of confidence, but we
still have to win games in order to get there."
Derek Anderson had 17 points and Wesley Person scored all of his
13 in the first quarter for Cleveland, which again played
without starting forward Shawn Kemp and guard Brevin Knight.
Kemp is day-to-day with an inflamed bursa sac in his right elbow
and Knight is out for the season with a broken hand.
The Cavaliers have dropped six in a row and fell three games
behind the New York Knicks for the final playoff spot in the
East.
"We gave a lot of effort," said Cavs coach Mike Fratello. "We
laid it out but we came up short. We had a couple of guys who
ran out of gas. Couple that with Philadelphia getting a
terrific second half from Allen Iverson, plus they picked up
their intensity. They were small things but they added up and
before you know it, the game is over."
Person carried the Cavs in the first quarter, hitting 5-of-7
shots to build a 25-17 lead. He netted 11 points in a 5:06
span, keying a 13-4 tear he capped with a 3-pointer at the 3:13
mark for a 20-14 advantage. The Sixers made six of their first
eight shots but missed their final 11 of the period.
Iverson missed his first eight shots as the Cavaliers often
rotated the taller player onto him when the Sixers tried to run
pick-and-rolls. He did not score until a driving lay-in with
5:09 to go in the first half that pulled Philadelphia within
32-27.
Anderson had a pair of free throws to give Cleveland a 36-29
lead with 3:29 to go, but a 3-pointer by Iverson triggered a
10-5 spurt to end the half as Philadelphia closed within 41-39.
"Cleveland did a great job in the first half," said Sixers coach
Larry Brown. "Fratello controlled the tempo and they ran their
stuff pretty well. We couldn't get them to turn the ball over
in the first half so we could run our fast-break offense."
Cleveland pulled within three points on three occasions, the
last time at 71-68 on a hook shot by Cedric Henderson with 5:05
to go. But Iverson curled off a screen and was fouled as he
made a driving lay-in. He completed the three-point play,
traded free throws with Andrew DeClerq and bounced off a pair of
Cavalier players before sinking a nine-footer in traffic to give
the Sixers a 77-69 lead at the 2:55 mark.
"I always try to play the same way regardless of how I start,"
said Iverson. "I missed my first seven or eight shots and it got
frustrating. I made a couple of shots toward the end of the
first half and that enabled me to get my game going in the
second."
Ratliff also pulled down 11 rebounds and Matt Geiger had 10 for
the Sixers, who shot 42 percent (30-of-72) from the field but
had 17 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.
Person took only five more shots the rest of the game and the
Cavs shot only 35 percent (25-of-71). Without Kemp, Cleveland
tried to work from the outside in, but made only 5-of-18 from
beyond the arc. Danny Ferry, starting in place of Kemp, had 13
points on 5-of-15 shooting.
"They switched more (after the first quarter)," said Person.
"Even their big guy was stepping up when I was coming off picks.
It seemed that everytime I touched the ball, they had three guys
coming at me. It forced me to pass the ball more instead of
taking bad shots."
