Game Story
INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- With the Orlando Magic desperately
needing a new winning combination, coach Chuck Daly went to a
three-guard offense. Darrell Armstrong, the newest starter
thanks to the change, helped make Daly look like a genius.
Armstrong buried an 18-footer with 1.6 seconds to play as the
Magic halted a five-game losing streak and defeated one of their
rivals for the Eastern Conference title with an 88-87 triumph
over the Indiana Pacers.
With the game on the line, Daly surprisingly opted to go to
Armstrong, a nominee for Sixth Man of the Year who has keyed
Orlando's run at a conference title. As Indiana seemingly
waited for Armstrong to pass, the 6-1 guard faked a drive on
Travis Best near the right side of the lane and pulled up for a
jumper that gave Orlando its only lead in the final eight
minutes.
"I can't remember hitting a bigger shot," Armstrong said. "It
looked like Travis gambled and reached for the ball. I was just
fortunate to get open. It felt good all the way."
Best's jumper from the right wing bounced off the back of the
rim as time ran out, dropping the Pacers one-half game behind
the Magic for the second-best record in the East.
Armstrong had 15 points and nine assists starting at the point
as Penny Hardaway moved to shooting guard. Hardaway scored 17
points before struggling in the final minutes, when he missed a
pair of drives. The three-guard look definitely benefited Nick
Anderson, who collected 23 points and 10 rebounds.
"I liked it tonight," Daly said of his new lineup. "A lot of
people had significant games, particularly people off the
bench."
"Coach told us before the game (Indiana coach) Larry Bird would
probably be telling his team to treat this like Game Seven of
the NBA Finals," Anderson said. "We took that same attitude
tonight."
Two weeks ago, Orlando was riding a six-game winning streak and
owned the best record in the conference. But the Magic had
dropped seven of eight before this win, falling two games behind
first-place Miami, which defeated New Jersey tonight.
"Without a doubt, this game was huge for us," Hardaway said. "It
puts us back where we want to be with a chance for the top
seed."
Reggie Miller almost singlehandedly kept the Pacers in front for
much of the fourth, scoring 11 of his 19 points in a five-minute
span late in the quarter. But Anderson's defense helped keep the
ball out of Miller's hands down the stretch, and Jalen Rose
missed the rim on his 3-point try as the shot clock expired with
7.2 seconds left.
Miller was unable to get open on the final play when Best
misfired as Indiana fell to 1-6 this season in one-point games.
"Reggie's always our first option," Bird said. "Travis got a
good look. It's hard to get Reggie open because everyone is
holding him."
A basket by Rose gave the Pacers their first lead of the fourth,
74-73, with eight minutes remaining. Shortly after missing a
layup and the follow attempt, Miller drained a 3-pointer and was
fouled. He sank the foul shot to push the advantage to 78-73.
Hardaway answered with a short jumper and Armstrong fed Anderson
for a fast-break layup that cut the deficit to one. After two
free throws by Antonio Davis, Miller made it 82-77 as he
followed a miss by Rose.
Anderson and Danny Schayes came back with jumpers but there was
Miller again, hitting a 22-footer with 3:05 left for an 84-81
lead. Anderson tied the game with his only 3-pointer, but
Miller drained one of his own as he fell out of bounds at the
right corner. Armstrong then found Horace Grant for a layup
that pulled Orlando within 87-86 with 1:44 to play.
"This shows we can't win the big one, here at home," Davis said.
"We've got to right this if we intend to do well in the
playoffs."
Davis tied a season high with 13 rebounds to go with his nine
points, but he and Best combined to shoot a dismal 2-of-13 off
the bench. Rik Smits had 12 points and Rose and Mark Jackson
added 10 apiece for Indiana, which shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81).
The Pacers held a 39-35 rebounding edge and a 21-11 advantage in
second-chance points. But Armstrong helped the Magic to a key
16-3 edge in fast-break points and hit 7-of-11 from the field as
Orlando connected on 54 percent (39-of-72).
"This was the most important win of the season for us,"
Armstrong added. "We've been losing at home, on the road,
everywhere. This keeps us in the thick of it."
Orlando had control early, building its largest lead of the game
at 24-14 late in the opening quarter. But Miller scored six
points in the final 2:14 of the period, including one of his
three 3-pointers, as Indiana pulled within 26-22.
The momentum stayed with the Pacers in the second quarter as
they grabbed a 47-44 advantage at intermission. The game
remained tight the rest of the way, with neither team taking a
lead of more than five points in the second half.
Grant chipped in 14 points and 11 boards, helping the Magic win
the season series with the Pacers, 2-1.
"This was a very tough loss with the same story on a different
day," Rose said. "We must stop this. I think we're thinking
about it too much and just haven't gotten into the rhythm to
pull out these games when need be."
