Game Story
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan scored 22 points and Jaren Jackson came off the bench to add 21 as the San Antonio Spurs nearly blew a 33-point lead but held on for their seventh straight win, a 94-88 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Eric Piatkowski drilled a 3-pointer with 1:20 left, pulling Los Angeles within 91-88. The Clippers were looking for a defensive stop late, but David Robinson fed Duncan inside for a layup with 18 seconds left for a five-point lead. Jackson made one of two free throws to provide the final margin.
San Antonio opened up a 4 1/2 game lead for the third seed in the Western Conference over Houston and began its three-game road swing with its sixth win over the Clippers in seven opportunities.
The Clippers started the fourth period with a 23-8 run, thanks to 11 points from Piatkowski. That was part of a 41-9 run after San Antonio had led 77-44 with 7:37 left in the third quarter.
"They made a great run and we compounded mistake after mistake, and they took advantage of it," Duncan said. "They have a lot of talent and I underestimated them."
"I have to give the Clippers a lot of credit." San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "It really says a lot of good things for their coaching staff and their players. The proof was in the game tonight."
Piatkowski scored 27 points and set a franchise record with 832 3-point attempts, breaking Ron Harper's previous mark of 828. Rookie Michael Olowokandi collected 12 points and Troy Hudson added 11 while becoming the first Clipper to play all 48 minutes of a game this season.
"It was a thrill, of course, but with Sherman's (Douglas) ankle injury, I knew I was going to play a lot," Hudson said. "It means a lot to my confidence that I get to play this many minutes even though we are rebuilding for next year."
"We were definitely playing the hottest team in the NBA," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "We didn't play defense in the first half. (In the second half) we didn't give them wide open shots and we were better on roatations."
Duncan scored four points during a 6-0 spurt to close the first quarter as San Antonio took a 28-22 lead.
The Spurs opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to open a commanding 37-22 lead. Jackson scored five points during that run and also drained a pair of 3-pointers during a 10-0 spurt that led to a 50-29 cushion with 5:06 left in the first half.
Jackson made 4-of-6 3-pointers en route to 14 first-half points as the Spurs cruised to a 62-37 lead at the break. He finished 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.
