Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Scottie Pippen scored 26 points and Charles Barkley added 20 and 16 rebounds as the Houston Rockets routed the Los Angeles Lakers, 102-80, in what was likely first-round playoff preview.
Cuttino Mobley scored 15 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 14 and eight rebounds for Houston, which snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Los Angeles for fourth place in the Western Conference. Pippen also contributed six steals, five rebounds and four assists.
"I never have any doubts about myself," Barkley said. "We just played well tonight. They are a better team if you let them get going. Tonight we were ready. We just came off three games where we didn't play well. We've got to concentrate on keeping the home court."
Shaquille O'Neal had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Glen Rice added 16 for Los Angeles, which has lost three straight and six of its last eight games.
"Obviously I'm not happy with our performance tonight," said Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis. "Our defensive intensity was not there. I was very disappointed. There were flashes of us being able to do what we're capable of doing but it wasn't nearly enough."
Rick Fox scored 12 points off the bench for the Lakers and Kobe Bryant added nine points and five rebounds. Bryant shot just 3-of-14 from the field.
"I was throwing up brick after brick. It seemed like I was building a project out there," Bryant said.
The Lakers won two of three games from the Rockets this season, giving them a tiebreaker edge. Houston has five games remaining and Los Angeles four.
The Rockets took the lead for good at 8-6 when Pippen hit a 3-pointer from the left sideline with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter. The basket triggered a 12-2 burst that pushed the advantage to 17-8 when Mobley hit a 21-footer with 5:06 to go.
"Tonight's game just shows how good of a team we can be. I definitely feel like we're still a championship-caliber team if we come out and play well, play hard and not try and preserve anything for tomorrow," Pippen said. "I don't think the monkey's off our back yet. But we came today and completed a game. It's a great feeling, especially against a team we may be facing in the playoffs."
Houston scored the final nine points of the first quarter to take a 26-14 lead when Mobley made a layup with 51 seconds remaining.
Pippen, who made 5-of-9 shots from behind the arc, made a 3-pointer to give the Rockets a 41-20 bulge with 8:04 remaining in the second. J.R. Reid made a jumper from the left sideline, his only basket of the game, to cap a 15-5 run and pull the Lakers within 46-35 with 3:53 left in the first half. But Pippen answered with a dunk 49 seconds later.
Pippen had 15 points in the first half and Houston built a 51-38 lead.
The Rockets used a 7-0 burst to increase the cushion to 70-47 on a six-footer by Barkley with 4:52 left in the third and took a 77-57 lead into the final period. The Lakers came no closer than 17 points in the fourth and the Rockets took their biggest lead when Pippen hit a 3-pointer to make it 95-70 with 4:30 left.
