Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury scored 26 points and handed out a career-high 20 assists as the New Jersey Nets capitalized on a huge first half and rolled to a 120-98 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
The Nets, who came into the game with the second-worst shooting percentage in the league at 40 percent, shot a blistering 73 percent (29-of-40) in the first half as they opened a 67-54 advantage.
Marbury dished out 12 assists in the first half and finished with three more than his previous high of 17, accomplished against Milwaukee while with the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 18, 1997. It also was an NBA season high, surpassing the 19 recorded by Jason Kidd of Phoenix on March 4.
"I got 17 assists a lot of times," Marbury said. "Tonight, it didn't feel like 20 assists whereas other nights it will feel like I have 30 assists, but I only had 15 or 16."
Keith Van Horn added 22 points and Kendall Gill contributed 21 for New Jersey, which fell one point shy of its highest output of the season and snapped a five-game losing streak against Indiana.
Van Horn left with 1:32 to go in the third quarter with a dislocated left thumb and did not return.
Reggie Miller poured in a season-high 34 points for the Pacers, who remained one game behind Miami for the best record in the Eastern Conference.
The Pacers built an early 20-10 advantage with 6:47 left in the first quarter after Miller, who went 11-of-21 from the floor, drained an 18-footer. Miller scored 10 points in the first quarter and Rik Smits had 13 of his 17 on 6-of-6 shooting.
But despite the play of Miller and Smits, the Nets pulled into a 36-36 tie after one quarter as Van Horn scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Each team was on fire from the floor in the opening quarter. The Nets shot 70 percent (16-of-23) while Indiana finished the period at 68 percent (15-of-22).
The Nets continued their torrid shooting and opened a 50-42 lead with 5 1/2 minutes left before halftime after Van Horn, who went 9-of-17 from the field, nailed a 21-footer.
Kerry Kittles scored 10 of his 13 points in the second quarter for New Jersey, which went 13-of-17 from the floor in the period and opened a 13-point advantage at intermission.
New Jersey finished a season-best 60 percent (47-of-78) from the floor.
"It was like playing horse out there for them," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "Our defense was non-existent the whole game. We just let them have medium-range shots. They were hitting from outside. We got chasing around and got off balance and they were penetrating and dishing and when they start hitting shots, that just tears your defense apart. This was a disaster for us to play defense like that."
A driving layup by Gill with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter gave the Nets their biggest lead at 94-71. A 38 percent shooter from the floor, Gill connected on 9-of-13 shots.
"Everyone is starting to get used to Stephon and understand the way he plays," Gill said. "It takes some time to get adjusted to him. But once you get adjusted, everything works."
Indiana pulled within 99-85 with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter on Jalen Rose's basket, but could get no closer.
Smits hit 8-of-9 shots from the floor as Indiana finished at 49 percent (34-of-70) from the field.
