Game Story
PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider scored 17 of his 22
points in the pivotal third quarter and the Portland Trail
Blazers used a huge edge on the boards to post a 100-84
bounce-back victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Held to only two points in seven minutes during the first half,
Rider exploded in the third quarter and scored seven in a key
11-2 run that broke open a one-point game. He made all eight of
his free throws in the period as Portland built an 80-67 lead.
"That's a very, very big quarter. That's above my (game)
average," Rider said. "I felt very good. I'm glad it came
against the Timberwolves, my old team. It makes it that much
sweeter."
Brian Grant and Rasheed Wallace each pulled down 11 rebounds,
helping the Blazers to an eye-popping 50-22 advantage on the
glass. The 22 rebounds were the fewest ever by a Portland
opponent and tied the lowest total in Timberwolves history.
"We controlled the glass. Rebounding was the key to the game,"
said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "Brian and Rasheed were solid
on the boards and J.R. (Rider) really got it going in the third
quarter."
"They killed us on the boards, and that was the difference in
play," said Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett. "Brian Grant is a
workhorse, and what he doesn't get, Rasheed is going to get. And
what Rasheed doesn't get falls into (Arvydas) Sabonis' hands."
Grant scored 24 points and Wallace added 13, with each
contributing six in the fourth as Portland maintained a lead of
no fewer than eight points.
Rider, the Blazers' leading scorer, was held to 11 points on
5-of-14 shooting in Friday's 96-85 loss to Utah in a battle for
the league's best record. Portland now trails the Jazz by 1 1/2
games for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Garnett scored 30 points for the stumbling Timberwolves, who
have lost four in a row and 10 of their last 12 games. In
suffering its eighth straight road loss, Minnesota fell into
eighth place in the Western Conference, one-half game behind
Sacramento.
With Portland clinging to a 51-50 lead early in the third
quarter, Damon Stoudamire fed Wallace for a dunk and hit Arvydas
Sabonis for a driving layup to spark the 11-2 tear. Rider
followed with two free throws and, after Terrell Brandon
answered with a layup, buried a 3-pointer off another assist by
Stoudamire. Rider's 21-footer capped the burst, giving Portland
a 62-52 lead with 7:12 to play.
"I told our guys at halftime to watch for J.R. (Rider), because
he will come out and take it to the rack, and J.R. got 17 in the
third quarter," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders.
Brandon fed Garnett for a layup that pulled Minnesota within
62-56, but Stacy Augmon sank two free throws and Rider buried a
jumper to bump the lead back to double digits. Later in the
period, Rider hit four straight foul shots to make it 74-63.
Portland had its highest-scoring third quarter of the season
with 31 points.
Grant's layup with 5:08 remaining gave the Blazers their largest
lead, 92-76. Dennis Scott responded with back-to-back 3-pointers
and Brandon fed Joe Smith for a dunk that cut it to eight.
Shortly thereafter, Wallace rebounded a miss by Brandon and
Grant sank two free throws. Rider missed a 13-footer, but Grant
got the rebound. Rider again tried from the outside and missed,
but Wallace put home a thunderous follow slam that created a
96-84 cushion with 2:02 to play.
"Yeah, we outrebounded them, but it was still a close game all
the way down until about five minutes in the fourth," Grant
said. "They stuck with it. Our defense is going to have to
definitely get better next time we meet up, if we meet up in the
playoffs."
Nine players had at least three rebounds for the Blazers, while
Garnett and Smith led the Timberwolves with four boards apiece.
"We've always had a problem in the past with Portland's size,"
Saunders added. "If you don't get bodies on them, they take it
to you because they're so long and big."
Minnesota has lost its last 13 trips to Portland since February
2, 1993, and is only 2-18 there all-time. The Blazers are 34-5
in the series, including three wins this season.
Smith scored 17 points and Brandon added 13 and 13 assists for
the Timberwolves, who forced 21 turnovers but were unable to
overcome the huge deficit on the glass.
