Game Story
INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 20 points and Travis Best added 12 off the bench as the Indiana Pacers moved closer to the lead in the Eastern Conference with an 87-69 victory over the Chicago Bulls.
Chris Mullin had 11 points and six rebounds and Dale Davis grabbed 12 rebounds for Indiana, which completed its first ever season sweep of Chicago. Antonio Davis had 11 rebounds and Mark Jackson contributed eight points and eight assists as the Pacers moved within one game of the idle Miami Heat for the best record in the East.
Mark Bryant scored 14 points and Ron Harper added 10 and seven rebounds for Chicago, which has lost three straight and 10 in a row on the road. Harper made just 1-of-13 shots in the second half as the Pacers extended a one-point halftime lead.
"We hung around for a while. We tried to set a tempo and a pace that would keep us in there," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "We hit that stretch where we couldn't hit anything. We would have felt more comfortable if we would have gotten some shots down."
The Bulls were held under 70 points for the sixth time this season and first since an embarrassing 82-49 loss to the Miami Heat on April 10 when they became the first team since the advent of the shot clock to score fewer than 50 points.
Chicago shot just 18 percent (4-for-22) and was outscored, 22-15, in the third period. The Pacers opened the fourth with an 18-4 run, taking their biggest lead when Jackson's 3-pointer made it 81-59 with 4:03 to play.
"This was a big win for us and we have to build on it," Jackson said. "The next two games are critical. We must get out there, play hard and get it done. I give Chicago credit. They came in with a game plan, stuck with it and played us tough. We were more aggressive in the second half and felt stronger and more confident."
Indiana took the lead for good when Jackson made a pair of free throws for a 51-49 edge with 5:59 remaining in the third. That sparked a 9-0 run, which he capped with a 3-pointer 2:54 later. The Pacers took a 63-55 lead into the fourth after Derrick McKey had a follow shot with 12.8 seconds left.
McKey, who had seven points, opened the fourth with a hook shot to trigger the 18-4 burst. Best had seven points in the run, including a 23-footer that made it 76-59 with 5:41 left.
