Game Story


NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks put the chaos of the
past week behind them and recorded a much-needed 110-105 victory
over the Charlotte Hornets. 


Playing only two days after president and general manager Ernie
Grunfeld was demoted by Madison Square Garden boss Dave
Checketts, the Knicks made the necessary plays down the stretch
to move past Charlotte into eighth place in the Eastern
Conference. 


New York, which broke a four-game losing streak, is tied for the
final playoff spot with the Toronto Raptors, who picked up a
huge victory in Orlando. 


"I thought offensively we did some good things," said Knicks
coach Jeff Van Gundy.  "But defensively, we struggled with their
speed." 


Allan Houston exploded for a season-high 30 points and Patrick
Ewing added 26, including a running jumper in the lane with 24
seconds left, as the Knicks held off the Hornets, who were
trying to rally from a 14-point deficit. 


"I just rolled with my game tonight," said Houston.  "I just
went out and let the game adjust to me.  We really played well
as a team tonight.  If we're going to make the playoffs, we have
to stick together.  Right now, we need to prepare ourselves for
the playoff run." 


Elden Campbell scored 17 points and Derrick Coleman 16 for
Charlotte, which had a nine-game winning streak stopped.  The
Hornets fell one win shy of tying the longest streak in team
history, set from February 21-March 13, 1998. 


"Losing one out of 10 is not bad," said Hornets guard Bobby
Phills.  "We fought hard, but still lost.  We really wanted the
victory, but we can't dwell on it too long.  We have a game
tomorrow that we must get ready for." 


New York entered the fourth quarter leading by 11 points and
quickly built an 88-74 bulge with 10:22 remaining when Larry
Johnson completed a three-point play.  David Wesley made a pair
of free throws with just over six minutes left to pull Charlotte
within 94-86, but it looked like the Knicks' would avoid another
fourth-quarter collapse when Marcus Camby threw down a dunk,
pushing the lead back to 10 points. 


Charlotte quickly responded, however, as Wesley made two more
free throws and Chuck Person drained a 3-pointer to make it
96-91.  The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes
before a bucket by Coleman and Phills' 3-pointer pulled
Charlotte within 101-99 with 1 1/2 minutes to play. 


"We are going to win a lot of games if we battle back like we
did tonight," Hornets interim coach Paul Silas said.  "We want
to continue to play hard and give ourselves a chance to win.  We
dug ourselves a hole tonight but we dug ourselves out of it." 


Ewing drove for a layup, but Coleman was fouled by Camby while
converting a layup and connected on the ensuing free throw to
make it a one-point contest. Camby made the first of two free
throws with 47 seconds left and the Hornets inexplicably allowed
the slim forward to grab his own rebound. 


Camby got the ball to Ewing, who gave the Knicks some breathing
room with his runner.  Johnson and Houston both made a pair of
free throws in the final 13 seconds as New York held on. 


"I thought Camby finished around the basket well," added Van
Gundy.  "I thought he played outstanding tonight.  With our
team, it's about finding ways to win." 


Camby had 18 points and 11 rebounds for New York, which held a
40-37 rebounding advantage and shot 53 percent (42-of-80),
including 4-of-10 from 3-point range.  Latrell Sprewell had 12
points, eight assists and six rebounds off the bench for the
Knicks. 


"We played well as a collective unit," said Camby.  "I thought
it was important that we continue to play hard. 


Bobby Phills contributed 16 points, Wesley 14 and Coleman
grabbed 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which connected on 46 percent
(35-of-76) of its field goals. The Hornets played their second
consecutive game without leading scorer Eddie Jones, who has a
lacerated finger on his right hand.
