Game Story
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Rookie Paul Pierce scored 18 points as the Boston Celtics took control from the start and handed the Chicago Bulls another embarrassing loss at the United Center, 100-71.
The Celtics used an 18-4 run in the first quarter to open a 15-point lead and held a commanding 52-32 advantage at halftime. Pierce had 12 points and Ron Mercer scored 10 of his 13 in the first half for Boston.
Tony Battie added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who took two of three games from the Bulls to win the season series for the first time since sweeping three games in 1986-87.
Rookie Kornel David had a season-high 20 points and Mark Bryant contributed 15 for Chicago, which suffered its fifth home loss by at least 20 points.
Despite playing for the third time in as many nights, the Celtics wasted little time taking control, opening the contest on a 21-6 run, capped by Pierce's 3-pointer with 5:57 left.
Pierce made all four of his shots -- three 3-pointers -- in the quarter as the Celtics opened a 31-16 advantage. Boston shot 57 percent (12-of-21) in the period while holding Chicago to just 27 percent (6-of-22) over the first 12 minutes.
"We just wanted to come out and get a win," Pierce said. "We had two close ones and this was our third game in three nights. We know we're not going to be in the playoffs. It's important that we go out and play hard and finish strong. Tonight we just executed well."
A 16-footer by Battie, who went 6-of-8 from the floor, gave the Celtics their biggest lead of the first half, 44-23, with 5 1/2 minutes remaining.
The Celtics' lead never dipped below 20 points in the second half and they took their biggest lead of the contest at 83-52 with 6:47 left in the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws by Battie.
"The last two weeks, we have played good basketball," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "With all the injuries, we knew our intensity would have to pick up. We needed a victory and this was one of those nights when everything goes right for one team and nothing does for the other."
For the game, Boston shot 48 percent (42-of-87) while holding the Bulls 32 percent (26-of-81). The Celtics also held a 50-40 rebounding edge.
Chicago's Toni Kukoc missed his second straight game with a sprained left shoulder.
"I knew it was going to be a fast-paced game," Bryant said. "We struggled the whole game. We thought they would slow down, but they didn't. We didn't respond all night long."
