Game Story
SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 27 points and Hersey Hawkins added a season-high 24 as the Seattle SuperSonics broke a three-game losing streak with a 119-105 triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The win was Seattle's first this season in three tries against Minnesota and prevented the Sonics from dropping three straight at KeyArena for the first time ever.
Hawkins also added 10 rebounds and Don MacLean scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 boards, helping Seattle outrebound Minnesota 46-32.
The Sonics shot 34-of-41 from the foul line, keyed by MacLean hitting on 13-of-16. The Timberwolves connected on 18-of-20 free throws.
"I worked hard to be ready and I think I answered the bell," MacLean said. "I stayed in shape. I was thinking about retiring a year and a half ago. If you're called upon, you better produce or you'll be playing in the CBA."
Seattle played its first game since learning that starting forward Vin Baker would be sidelined two to four weeks with a bone contusion in his right knee. He also sat out Monday's loss to Houston with what was originally believed to be a sore knee.
Kevin Garnett netted 23 points for the Timberwolves, who dropped their sixth straight road contest and fifth in six games overall.
Terrell Brandon and Anthony Peeler, each playing their first game since being activated from the injury list, scored 19 and 13, respectively, for Minnesota.
"It feels great to be running around," Peeler said. "You can't come back from a month off and do some of the things you were doing. We've got to come out and set the tempo in the first quarter."
The Sonics raced to an 18-4 lead 5:24 into the contest with MacLean leading the way with seven points. Payton scored 11 in the first quarter, helping Seattle to a 32-22 advantage.
"We received some great performacnes, Don MacLean particularly," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "He really got us going in the first quarter and everyone was focused. Don MacLean is a threat on the perimeter and pretty quick off the dribble."
Payton and Hawkins finished the first half with 17 points apiece as the Sonics grabbed a 61-47 lead. Garnett led Minnesota with 15, but netted only four points in the second period.
"Our defense was poor and that's putting it mildly," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "I'm disappointed we didn't come out with any energy. We had some good looks early, but couldn't put them down."
Seattle scored 10 straight points in less than two minutes of the third quarter, opening a 95-67 lead with 1:09 remaining. Hawkins finished the spurt with six points as the Sonics built their lead to 98-72 at the end of the period.
