Game Story
MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and the Miami Heat continued their success against the Cleveland Cavaliers while moving into the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 93-80 victory.
Mashburn scored 10 points in the first half, when Alonzo Mourning had 10 of his 18, as the Heat never trailed and opened a 49-33 advantage through 24 minutes.
Dan Majerle and Tim Hardaway contributed 14 points apiece for Miami (28-13), which has won nine of its last 11 games to move percentage points ahead of idle Orlando (29-14) for the Atlantic Division lead and best record in the East. The Heat play in Orlando on Thursday.
Miami swept a home-and-home series from the Cavaliers, defeating them for the 14th time in the last 16 meetings.
"Throughout the course of the game, I thought we were energetic and the effort defensively in the first half was very good," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Cleveland plays extremely hard, however, they are undermanned right now with guys out and banged up."
Danny Ferry and rookie Ryan Stack scored 11 points apiece for the Cavaliers, who fell into a three-way tie for ninth in the East, one-half game behind Charlotte for the final playoff berth. Cleveland played without injured regulars Derek Anderson and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
"They've beaten us pretty well the first two times we've played," Ferry said. "If we do play them again, we need to go in and compete with them and show ourselves they're a team we can compete with."
The Heat led 13-12 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter when Keith Askins, returning from a one-game suspension, drained a 3-pointer and Hardaway converted a layup to trigger a 14-6 surge to close the quarter that put Miami ahead by nine.
Cleveland scored the first four points of the second period, but the Heat answered with an 11-4 burst, capped by Majerle's 3-pointer to open a 38-25 cushion with 4:28 to play before intermission. Mashburn, who went 6-of-10 from the floor, had six points in the run.
Coming off a season-high 22 points two days ago against Cleveland, Majerle went 5-of-6 from the floor, including making 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range. In his last two games, Majerle is 13-of-19 from the floor and 9-of-12 from beyond the arc.
"It's always nice to make shots," Majerle said. "I've been trying to put a bit more of an arc on my shot lately and that's worked out well. I feel like I've been in a shooting slump all year and that's why it's nice to be on a bit of a roll."
A drving layup by Mourning with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter gave the Heat their biggest lead of the contest at 68-43.
Mourning, who also grabbed 11 rebounds, went 7-of-18 from the floor as the Heat shot 43 percent (29-of-67) and held a comfortable 42-25 rebounding edge.
The Cavs used a 21-7 spurt, capped by Ferry's 3-pointer to close to 75-64 with 7:59 remaining. Ferry finished 5-of-9 from the field.
Miami put the defensive clamps on Cavs leading scorer Shawn Kemp. After totaling 32 points and 11 rebounds on Monday against the Heat, Kemp was held to just 10 and three, respectively.
Mitchell Butler also had 10 points for the Cavs, who shot 49 percent (35-of-72).
