Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference with their ninth straight victory, an 88-85 triumph over the Detroit Pistons.
Charlotte, eight games below .500 on April 5, is now 21-20 and would make the playoffs if the season ended tonight. The Hornets moved into the eighth position after Cleveland lost to Miami.
"Tonight was a total team effort," said Hornets interim coach Paul Silas. "We struggled early on. The shots just weren't falling tonight but we fought through it and that makes me proud."
This game was tied, 81-81, with just under four minutes to play but Elden Campbell made a free throw and a short jumper and Bobby Phills drained a huge 3-pointer moments later as the Hornets pulled away.
Campbell finished with a season-high 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Charlotte, which is one win shy of matching the longest winning streak in team history, accomplished last season from February 21-March 13.
"Elden Campbell was nothing short of sensational tonight," added Silas. "The big fella was not going to be denied. He's become a monster inside."
The Hornets are 8-2 this season in games decided by three points or less.
"We don't want to stop improving, we have to keep working," said Charlotte guard David Wesley. "Everybody was cautious at first given our situation, but we're playing well for coach Silas."
Grant Hill had 28 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Pistons, who lost for the fifth time in six games.
"We just have to play good defense," said Hill. "We didn't play tough this game. We have to keep working hard and work right through it."
Neither team could grab more than a four-point advantage during the fourth quarter and Hill forced the fifth tie of the period by making two free throws with 3:48 to play.
Campbell hit the second of two free throws 12 seconds later and, after Jerry Stackhouse missed on the other end, Campbell drained an 11-footer to give the Hornets an 84-81 lead. Detroit's Bison Dele was fouled while converting a layup but missed the ensuing free throw in an attempt to tie.
Campbell grabbed the rebound of the miss, leading to Phills' 3-pointer from the right corner that made it 87-83 with 1:26 to play. Hill halved the deficit with two free throws at the 1:14 mark, but Jud Buechler missed a jumper with 34 seconds left that could have tied it.
Phills connected on the second of two free throws with 11 seconds remaining and despite the three-point deficit, Hill misfired on a 13-footer with 7.7 seconds left and the Hornets were able to celebrate a victory soon after.
Phills scored 15 points and Wesley contributed 13. Chucky Brown had nine points and seven rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 46 percent (30-of-65) and went 27-of-38 from the foul line.
"We've been just winning the games," Brown said. "Late in the game, we did good things to win. They made early baskets. We feel we're playing together. We're moving the ball around, especially in the second half tonight. It's good to be able to go out and compete in any every game."
Jerome Williams had 22 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five steals for Detroit, which connected on 42 percent (33-of-79) of its field goals and was 1-of-11 from 3-point range.
"It's easy. They're a better team than us," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "It's as simple as that. They've beaten us three straight games."
"You have to play hard every night in this league," Stackhouse added. "Basically, we fell apart. It seemed like we had the game under control. We had the opportunities to make plays and we didn't do it."
The Hornets were without swingman Eddie Jones, who is sidelined with a lacerated finger on his right hand.
