Game Story
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Even in victory, the Chicago Bulls find ways to suffer losses in this disappointing 1999 season.
Toni Kukoc had 25 points, seven rebounds and nine assists but was forced out of the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury as the Bulls posted an 83-77 victory over the lifeless Washington Wizards.
Kukoc, who leads Chicago in scoring, rebounding and assists, was attempting a driving layup with 3:51 to play when he was fouled hard by Washington forward Otis Thorpe.
Kukoc lay motionless on the court for several minutes before leaving with what initially was diagnosed as a sprained joint in his left shoulder. Chicago coach Tim Floyd indicated Kukoc would not be available for Wednesday's contest at New Jersey.
"Toni has a sprained joint in the shoulder," Floyd said. "He will not play tomorrow. It is a Grade 1 sprain, which they tell me is the least severe. Toni's play was terrific in all areas. He made big baskets for us."
"We had no answer for Kukoc tonight," Washington coach Jim Brovelli added. "From what I could see, it looked like he got hurt as he came down."
Kukoc will not travel with the team and will undergo further tests in Chicago on Wednesday.
Rookie Cory Carr, making his first professional start, scored 10 points and helped hold Washington leading scorer Mitch Richmond to just 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting in 40 minutes.
"(Richmond) is an All-Star in this league," Carr said. "You just have to limit his touches and hopefully he'll miss his shots. I took it upon myself to limit him. You have to honor his shot."
Dickey Simpkins had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who have a modest two-game winning streak after a season-high seven-game losing skid.
Rod Strickland had 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists for Washington, which has lost eight of its last 11 games. With nine games left, the Wizards are five games behind Cleveland for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Thorpe collected nine rebounds and became the 16th player in NBA history to record 15,000 points and 10,000 boards.
"I'm a little flat and dead because we lost the game," Thorpe said. "The record tells, though, if you hang around, work hard and learn the systems you play in, good things will happen. It's a real honor to reach this level and to be part of this club of legendary players in the game."
Tracy Murray scored 13 points and Ben Wallace added 11 for the Wizards, who shot 35 percent (28-of-80) and committed 15 turnovers.
Mark Bryant scored 13 points for Chicago, including a layup with 36 seconds left that gave the Bulls a comfortable 81-75 lead.
Kukoc, who was 11-of-18 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point range, buried a 25-footer with 9:52 remaining that gave the Bulls their biggest lead, 60-47.
"I just hoped it was not a season-ending injury (when Kukoc) went down," Floyd added. "With so much winning that he experienced here and then to lose this year, it has been tough for him."
