Game Story
BOSTON (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 23 points as the Indiana Pacers kept coach Larry Bird perfect against his former team, rolling to a 120-104 victory over the shorthanded Boston Celtics.
Chris Mullin added 21 points and Antonio Davis 17 off the bench for Indiana, which snapped a two-game losing skid and pulled within two games of Orlando for the Eastern Conference lead. The Pacers are third in the East, one game behind second-place Miami.
Bird, who led the Celtics to three NBA titles during his stellar playing career, improved to 7-0 against Boston as Indiana coach. The Pacers have won nine straight against the Celtics overall.
"I told my team tonight before the game we need to win the rest of our games, all eight," said Bird, who reached the Eastern Conference finals and pushed the Chicago Bulls to a seventh game last season as a rookie coach. "I want us to be on a roll, I expect us to win them all."
Rookie Paul Pierce scored a season-high 30 points and Vitaly Potapenko added career bests of 26 points and 16 rebounds for the Celtics, who had a two-game winning streak stopped.
Boston played without starters Kenny Anderson, Ron Mercer and Antoine Walker, all of whom are injured.
The teams played at a breakneck pace in the first half as Indiana led, 68-64. Mullin, who had 14 in the first quarter, scored 17 while Pierce netted 22, almost seven above his per game average.
"I knew I was going to be asked to step up individually, offensively and defensively," said Pierce. "We were pressing the whole game, that wore us down. I thought to myself at halftime, `Can I really keep putting up these points at this pace '"
"Pierce played very well, he hit a lot at the beginning of the game," said Bird. "He and Mullin were matching shots. But we put Reggie on him later in the game and he hit a few shots and then we put Derrick McKey on him after that to shut him down."
The depth of the Pacers wore down the Celtics, who rotated only eight players. A jumper by Potapenko pulled Boston within 71-66 at the 10:10 mark of the third quarter as Mullin hit a 17-footer and Mark Jackson sank a layup before Miller hit a 3-pointer to make it 78-66 with 8:18 to go.
A 20-footer by Greg Minor drew the Celtics to 80-73, but Antonio Davis sandwiched 3-pointers by Miller and Jackson around a 17-footer and three-point play of his own as Indiana's lead mushroomed to 91-73 with 3:16 to go in the third quarter. The Pacers grabbed their largest lead at 116-93 with 3:14 to play on a lay-in by McKey.
"That first half might have been entertaining, but I liked the defense a whole lot more in the second," said Bird. "We were unselfish. When you play hard and are into the game, you see guys on the other side of the court like we did."
"We did the best we could," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "We just got a little tired in the second half. We really enjoyed playing that style, we just didn't have the depth or the numbers to continue it. Although we really tried to do it, we just ran out of gas."
Seven players finished in double figures for the Pacers as McKey netted 13 points, Jackson 12 and Dale Davis and Jalen Rose had 10 each. Indiana shot better from 3-point range (10-of-18, 55.6 percent) than overall (44-of-87, 50.6 percent).
"We're all disappointed about the last two games, losing to Philly and Miami," said Miller. "But I am happy we're giving a good team effort."
Pierce also had 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who shot 46 percent (40-of-87). The former Jayhawk was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, but the rest of his teammates went 2-of-9 from the 3-point circle.
