Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- If the Seattle SuperSonics fail to make the playoffs for the first time in nine years, they can blame the Phoenix Suns.
Clifford Robinson scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the Suns solidify their hold on seventh place in the Western Conference with a 99-93 victory over Seattle.
Phoenix beat Seattle for the second time in five days and swept a season series from its Pacific Division rival for the first time in franchise history, although the teams met just three times in this shortened season.
"It's not about season sweeps or anything, but how you finish the year and do in the playoffs," Suns coach Danny Ainge said.
The Suns (21-20) won their third straight and moved over .500 for the first time since March 17. They trail sixth-place Minnesota by half game.
Seattle (19-21) is sputtering down the stretch with eight losses in its last 12 games. The Sonics are clinging to eighth place in the West, one game ahead of Sacramento and Golden State.
Sonics coach Paul Westphal returned to Phoenix for the first time since he was fired in January 1996. Seattle lost its previous two games at home this season to the Suns.
"I have great memories of Phoenix," Westphal said. "I lived here for a long time and I have a lot of really good friends here. I didn't really make this about me because it's about the Sonics coming in here and trying to beat the Suns."
In a stretch of three games in three days, the Sonics lost to Phoenix on Wednesday, won an overtime thriller at Sacramento on Thursday and were embarrassed at home by the lowly New Jersey Nets on Friday.
Tom Gugliotta led Phoenix with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
"It's a big win for us," Gugliotta said. "We felt it's a game we had to have, and it put us closer to the playoffs, and maybe getting the sixth spot."
Gary Payton had 21 points and 11 assists and Detlef Schrempf added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Seattle.
After a basket by Schrempf with just over nine minutes left tied the game at 80-80, Robinson scored the Suns' next five points. He converted two free throws, hit a jumper and added another free throw to give Phoenix an 85-82 lead with 7:27 left.
A dunk by Vin Baker pulled the Sonics within 85-84 with 6:38 to go. But Rex Chapman, who has struggled all year to find his shooting rhythm, sank a huge 3-pointer and Danny Manning scored on a tip-in with 5:20 remaining to increase the lead to 90-84. Manning finished with 14 points off the bench.
"Danny's tip-in there was huge," said Ainge. "His six offensive rebounds were huge because we were struggling to make shots."
Seattle pulled within 92-89 on a layup by Payton with 1:27 left. But Jason Kidd sank four free throws in the final 48 seconds to seal the win.
Kidd had 15 points and 11 assists but made just 4-of-16 shots while attempting to shake off the intense defense of Payton. The Bay area natives staged a classic point guard battle Wednesday when Kidd had 30 points and 10 assists and Payton scored 31 points.
"We have a great deal of respect for each other," Kidd said. "He's one of the best players in the world. He brings the best out of me. He got the best of me today, but we won."
In an attempt to shake up the lineup after Friday's disastrous loss to the Nets, Westphal started Don MacLean at forward and he produced a season-high 16 points and seven rebounds.
Gugliotta scored 16 points in the first half, helping Phoenix to a 52-48 lead.
