Game Story
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Mark Bryant drained a jumper with 2.3
seconds remaining as the Chicago Bulls snapped a seven-game
losing streak and prevented the Milwaukee Bucks from moving up
in the Eastern Conference standings with a 79-77 victory.
Bryant received a pass from Randy Brown at the foul line,
dribbled once to the right and pulled up and drained a 10-footer
to put the Bulls in front.
Following a pair of timeouts, the Bucks had one last chance to
win. Vinny Del Negro found a wide-open Glenn Robinson with an
in-bounds pass along the left wing. But Robinson's 14-footer
bounced off the rim as time expired.
"I thought it was a pretty good shot," Robinson said. "I would
like to have that shot 10 times. I probably make it nine out of
10. The problem is that you can't make them all."
The Bucks suffered their second straight loss in the final
seconds. On Friday, Milwaukee lost to the Charlotte Hornets
when David Wesley hit a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds
remaining.
Ray Allen scored 19 points and Robinson added 17 for Milwaukee,
which lost for the fourth time in six games and missed a chance
to move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks
remained half-game behind the Pistons, who lost earlier in the
day.
"I'm not disappointed in my team, I'm disappointed in the
result," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "I thought the team
played hard. It's tough to win on the road shooting 35 percent.
We're a team that is still learning and we still have to learn
how to win tough games."
Toni Kukoc contributed 22 points and Randy Brown collected 16
points and 10 assists for Chicago, which stopped seven-game
losing streak for the second time this season. The Bulls have
not lost eight straight games since November 25-December 10,
1983.
"That was a real good win for us," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said.
"We played with confidence. I think it had something to do with
how well how well we played Milwaukee the first three times. I'm
proud of the team with the way they held on and won the ballgame
at the end."
The Bulls opened the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead and
still held a 75-68 advantage with 5:07 to play after Brown sank
a pair of free throws. Brown was 5-of-13 from the field and made
all six foul shots.
But Allen scored five points and Robinson four in a 9-0 surge
that put the Bucks ahead, 77-75, with two minutes to go. A dunk
by Dickey Simpkins with 69 seconds to go pulled the Bulls into a
tie.
Despite leading the Bulls in scoring, Kukoc went scoreless in a
fourth quarter in which Chicago shot 35 percent (6-of-17). Kukoc
went 8-of-15 from the floor.
An 11-footer by Robinson, who connected on just 5-of-17 shots,
gave the Bucks a 54-51 lead with 4:51 left in the third quarter.
Consecutive baskets by rookie Corey Benjamin and a 3-pointer by
Kukoc, triggered a 13-3 surge that gave the Bulls a 64-57 lead
into the final period. Benjamin had a season-high 12 points.
"I wanted to go out and just play my game," Benjamin said. "I
thought I played well on both offense and defense. This game
helps my confidence. I'm learning a lot about professional
basketball."
Chicago shot 42 percent (30-of-72) while holding the Bucks to
only 38 percent (27-of-71) from the floor. The Bucks came in as
the top 3-point shooting team in the league but finished just
1-of-11 from beyond the arc.
