Game Story
DALLAS (Ticker) -- Greg Anthony scored 17 of his season-high 23
points in the fourth quarter, including all four of his
3-pointers, as the Portland Trail Blazers found a new hero and
pulled out a 101-92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
Anthony hit only 1-of-3 shots in eight minutes during the first
three quarters before exploding for Portland, which blew a
12-point lead in the second half before notching its seventh
straight win over Dallas.
Anthony's turnover led to Michael Finley's layup, which pulled
Dallas within 83-82 with 6:14 to play. The reserve guard
quickly atoned by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, which capped
a decisive 10-2 run.
"We had to win the game. We all know that," Anthony said. "It's
not a matter of having to step it up or anything, it's a matter
of us just doing what it takes to win."
Anthony later answered a 3-pointer by Hubert Davis with one of
his own, giving Portland a 92-86 advantage with 2:56 to go.
After two foul shots by Finley, Anthony hit again from beyond
the arc.
He added three free throws in the final minute, surpassing his
previous season best by six points. Anthony, who came into the
game averaging just 6.0 points, finished 6-of-9 from the field
and 7-of-8 at the line.
The Blazers were coming off back-to-back road losses and had
dropped four of their last six games overall. They remained 1
1/2 games back of the Utah Jazz for the league's best record.
"That's the first time we lost two in a row. We were down, then
we got down by one tonight," said Blazers forward Brian Grant.
"We got one person to stand up, Greg Anthony. We need someone
to do that."
Gary Trent helped Dallas make a run in the third quarter when he
collected 15 of his 24 points. Michael Finley also scored 24
points but was unable to prevent Dallas from suffering its fifth
loss in seven games.
Anthony led a huge effort from the Blazers' bench, which scored
25 of the team's 29 points in the final period. They outscored
the Mavs' reserves, 42-18.
"Our second unit just got on a roll, particularly Greg Anthony,"
said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "It was a big win for us
since we lost a couple of games in a row."
"They have a lot of talent. Their second unit could compete in
this league," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson.
Arvydas Sabonis led Portland's starters with 22 points,
including 12 in the third. But his performance that period was
easily outshined by Trent.
The Blazers matched their largest lead at 71-59 on a hook shot
by Sabonis with 3:34 left in the third period. The Mavericks
suddenly stormed back with a quarter-closing 13-2 burst. Trent
buried a 17-footer before hitting a layup to close the run with
1.9 seconds left.
Finley gave Dallas its first lead of the game, 74-73, with two
free throws to open the fourth quarter. A foul shot by Trent
with 7:56 to play had the Mavs in front, 80-79, but reserve Walt
Williams answered with a pair from the line to trigger the
pivotal run and put Portland ahead to stay.
The Blazers increased their lead in the Pacific Division to 5
1/2 games over the Lakers.
"It's no secret, we're trying to obtain the best record in the
league," Anthony added. "That has to be in the back of your
mind and these games have to take on a sense of urgency for us."
A hook shot and layup by Sabonis and Damon Stoudamire's driving
lay-in gave Portland an early 16-8 lead. Dallas faced a 20-14
deficit after one quarter but opened the second with an 8-2
spurt, capped by Hubert Davis' 3-pointer that tied the game.
With a 32-30 advantage midway through the period, the Blazers
reeled off a 10-1 run. Grant's two free throws made it 42-31
with four minutes left before halftime. Portland held a 51-43
lead at intermission.
Grant had 14 points and nine rebounds, leading the Blazers to a
43-30 edge on the boards and helping them to a 52-28 advantage
in points in the paint. Sabonis hit 11-of-16 from the floor and
the Blazers finished at 52 percent (41-of-79).
Rookie Dirk Nowitzki scored 17 points but went scoreless in the
fourth quarter and committed five of the Mavs' 16 turnovers,
which led to 29 points for the Blazers. Dallas scored just 13
points off 14 Portland turnovers.
"Tonight in the fourth quarter, I was a little tired. I'm
disappointed, but I'm getting better," said Nowitzki. "We are
playing a lot better. When we come out with a great effort at
home, we can beat anybody."
