Game Story
MIAMI (Ticker) -- Three nights after setting an NBA record for
offensive futility, the Chicago Bulls tried to break the mark
for outward frustration.
Coach Tim Floyd and guard Randy Brown were ejected for arguing
in the decisive second quarter of a 90-74 loss to the Miami
Heat, who continue to set the standard for defense in the NBA.
"I think our guys were a little embarrassed," Floyd said. "I
thought they came out with a lot of intensity. We had a few
flagrant fouls but we were ready to play. The great thing about
playing the Heat is that they show us what we want to be one
day."
Saturday night at the United Center, the Bulls set an NBA record
for futility by becoming the first team in the shot-clock era to
score less than 50 points in an 82-49 loss to the Heat. Tonight,
Chicago had 51 points by the end of the third quarter but still
could not compete as Miami coasted to its sixth straight win.
Alonzo Mourning had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Tim Hardaway
added 17 points as the Heat used their league-leading defense to
hold an opponent below 75 points for the sixth time and under 80
for the 14th time this season.
"We are going downhill and not finishing up games," Mourning
said. "We can't go into the postseason like last year. Last
year, we stumbled into the postseason."
The Bulls took an 18-17 lead on Brown's driving layup with 1:30
remaining in the first quarter. The Heat exploded for an 11-0
run capped by consecutive layups by Jamal Mashburn that put them
ahead for good, 28-18, with 10:08 left in the first half.
Floyd lost his cool during the burst. He was ejected with 10:59
left after an argument with referee Tony Brothers led to two
quick technicals. Miami continued to pull away throughout the
period, opening a 48-32 bulge with less than a minute left
before Brown earned an ejection by lashing into Bob Delaney with
40 seconds to go.
With the victory, Miami coach Pat Riley moved past the legendary
Red Auerbach into sole possession of third place on the all-time
wins list with 939. He needs five more to tie Dick Motta for
second place.
Riley was less than impressed with his team's 22 turnovers and
the inability to keep up defensive intensity throughout the
contest.
"Our guys were very careless," Riley said. "They didn't finish
the game at all. I don't like the kind of defense we played
tonight at all."
Toni Kukoc collected 25 points and Ron Harper and Rusty LaRue
each added 15 for the Bulls, who have lost five in a row and
seven straight on the road.
"The last time we played them we didn't play an intense game,"
Harper said. "They were doing some very hard fouling but we had
to foul as hard, too. Our team isn't scared of them."
Miami guard Voshon Lenard played for the first time this season
after spending the first 35 games on the injured list with a
fractured right leg. Lenard, the Heat's leading 3-point shooter
last season, scored five points in only eight minutes.
"I'm more concerned about my wind," said Lenard. "After I get
back into the swing of things, I'll be in pretty good shape. I
try not to do too much running on the leg when I'm not in the
game."
Mashburn scored 17 points and P.J. Brown added 10 for the Heat,
who shot 49 percent (33-of-68) and scored 21 points off 17
turnovers.
The Bulls, who shot just 23 percent against Miami on Saturday,
made 39 percent (28-of-71) from the field tonight but were
outrebounded, 40-30.
Clarence Weatherspoon's layup with 1:11 remaining in the first
quarter put Miami ahead for good, 19-18, before Mourning hit a
free throw with 25 seconds left.
Terry Porter hit a technical free throw and Weatherspoon added a
pair from the stripe before Floyd engaged in a verbal battle
with Brothers. Porter sank the ensuing free throw and Mashburn
made a pair of layups to give the Heat a 28-18 cushion with
10:09 remaining.
Dickey Simpkins further illustrated the Bulls' frustration when
he hurled Mourning to the floor to earn a flagrant foul with
just over seven minutes to play. Simpkins also accidentally
elbowed Harper in the first half, resulting in six stitches over
the right eyebrow of his teammate.
"We had some things we had to accomplish," Simpkins said. "The
first thing was to score more than 50 points."
Harper, who returned to action in the third quarter with a
bandage covering the injury, was continually goaded by Miami
fans as the game grew more and more physical.
"They were saying a lot of nasty things about my team," Harper
added. "And I was telling them that I had three championship
rings. If any fan wants to meet me in a gym, just give me a
call. I'll be happy to play."
