Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers are officially on a roll and the New Jersey Nets have officially hit rock bottom.
Lamond Murray scored 22 points and hit a crucial 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as the league-worst Clippers held on for a 109-101 victory over New Jersey that gave them consecutive wins for the first time in well over a year.
"We gained confidence when they made their run in the fourth quarter and we answered," said Murray. "With each win we get more confidence. We lost to Portland and we came back and beat them on the road and that gave us even more confidence."
Los Angeles (6-31) followed up Sunday's shocking 89-83 win at league-leading Portland by outhustling the Nets on both ends of the court throughout this contest for their third victory in four games.
The Clippers had not recorded back-to-back wins since reeling off three in a row from December 27, 1997-January 3, 1998.
"The energetic team won," New Jersey coach Don Casey said. "They were obviously excited from their Portland game and they came out aggressive. Our response was nil."
Rookie Tyrone Nesby added 20 points and Maurice Taylor had 18 and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which had an 18-point second-half lead cut to five before Murray's 3-pointer with 2:35 to play squelched the Nets' late rally.
Keith Van Horn scored 33 points and Stephon Marbury added 23 for New Jersey, which showed signs of life by winning five of its previous seven games. The Nets (10-27) are just one-half game ahead of Chicago for the Eastern Conference cellar.
"They're a confidence team and we allowed them to get their confidence," Van Horn said. "I think they have a talented team. I think they have a lot of solid NBA players."
The game, which featured four lead changes and two ties, swung in the Clippers' favor midway through the second quarter.
Murray hit an 18-foot jumper to put Los Angeles ahead for good, 35-34, with 8:12 remaining in the period, sparking a 10-1 run. He also had a driving layup and a pair of free throws during the spurt, which gave the Clippers a 43-35 bulge with 6:02 left.
Entering the fourth quarter with a comfortable 89-74 lead, Los Angeles let New Jersey back in it. Van Horn hit a 12-foot hook shot, a pair of free throws and a driving layup to fuel a 12-2 run that cut the deficit to 91-86 with 8:32 to play.
"We closed the gap but I think it was a facade," added Casey. "We weren't doing all the right things and when we made that move they stopped us. They made the big play, the big block."
The teams exchanged baskets over the next six minutes before Murray drained his decisive 25-footer. Sherman Douglas, who had 18 points and six assists, sank a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 106-96 with 2:20 to go.
Kerry Kittles collected 16 points and Kendall Gill added 10 for New Jersey, which shot 42 percent (36-of-85) and forced 19 turnovers.
Murray was 7-of-11 from the field, leading the Clippers to a sparkling 57 percent (44-of-77) performance from the field. Los Angeles outrebounded New Jersey, 40-39.
Eric Piatkowski scored 17 points and hit three of Los Angeles' six 3-pointers.
"It was fun," said Piatkowski. "I think everyone played well from the get go. It was kind of back and forth -- we'd go up by seven or eight but they kept coming back and staying in the game."
