Game Story


VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Vlade Divac scored seven
of his 13 points in the final five minutes as the Sacramento
Kings held on for a 91-88 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies. 


Divac hit 1-of-2 from the line with 4.3 seconds remaining to
give the Kings a three-point lead and Vancouver's Pete Chilcutt
missed an off-balance 3-pointer from the right wing at the
buzzer. 


Despite blowing an 11-point lead in the final 10 minutes, the
Kings pulled within one game of Phoenix for the final playoff
spot in the Western Conference. 


"I don't know if we lost the lead or if they just got back into
it, but it's a win and we needed it," Sacramento coach Rick
Adelman said. "Games are going to be tough down the stretch. We
had chances to take control, but we did just enough to win the
game and that's all that's important." 


Sacramento's Chris Webber had his 33rd double-double with 24
points and 10 rebounds but scored his last points with 8:09
remaining in the third quarter. 


"I think they played very well," Webber said. "We kept trying to
get a lead and increase it, but they showed a lot of resolve.
They've got one of the best players in the NBA in Shareef
(Abdur-Rahim) and they're gonna be good in the future." 


Vancouver used a 17-5 run to pull into a 71-71 tie on
Abdur-Rahim's three-point play with 52 seconds remaining in the
period. Abdur-Rahim scored 23 points and rookie Mike Bibby added
21 for the Grizzlies. 


Sacramento answered as Vernon Maxwell and rookie Jason Williams
hit consecutive 3-pointers to end the period and ignite an 11-0
run that continued into the final quarter. The Kings took an
82-71 lead on rookie Predrag Stojakovic's three-point with 10:39
left. 


After Bibby's 12-footer pulled Vancouver within 87-85, Divac hit
a layup and Williams made 1-of-2 from the line to give the Kings
a 90-85 lead with 1:32 left. 


The Grizzlies closed to 90-88 on Abdur-Rahim's three-point play
15 seconds later and missed three chances to tie in the final 32
seconds. 


Bibby was tied up by Maxwell in the lane, resulting in a jump
ball that was controled by Divac. 


After Stojakovic missed a 25-pointer, Michael Smith grabbed the
rebound for Vancouver with 7.9 remaining and called a time out,
giving the Grizzlies possession at halfcourt. 


Chilcutt passed over 6-9 Lawrence Funderburke to Abdur-Rahim,
who appeared to have a clear lane to the basket. But the
Vancouver forward stepped out of bounds, giving the ball back to
Sacramento. 


"It was a play called for me and when I got it, I just turned
around and I was gone," Abdur-Rahim said. "Everybody's back was
to me and I had the court wide open. I was definitely going to
score." 


"I told Chris (Webber) I was gonna force him out on the side
because I knew he wanted the ball so bad," Funderburke added.
"He was way over the line. It wasn't even a question." 


Divac made his second free throw, forcing the Grizzlies to go
for the 3-pointer to tie. 


"I thought it was so crucial with four seconds left," Williams
said. "They really had no choice but to foul us and Vlade went
down and made one. That put all the pressure on them to have to
hit a 3 and they came up short." 


Chilcutt's 3-pointer hit off the back of the rim, handing the
Grizzlies another close defeat. Vancouver has dropped 11 of its
last 13 games, with eight of the defeats coming by five points
or less. 


"If something can go wrong, it definitely does go wrong,"
Abdur-Rahim said. "If it isn't a missed call at the end, it's
something else. I just can't believe how every close game we
have something go wrong. It's frustrating." 


Webber scored 18 points in the first half, helping the Kings
open a 52-47 lead. Sacramento stretched its advantage to 66-54
on Webber's jumper with 8:09 left in the third quarter. 


Maxwell had 11 points and Funderburke added 10 for the Kings,
who shot 47 percent (38-of-81) from the field and forced 18
turnovers. 


Tony Massenburg had 17 points for Vancouver while Smith added 10
and 14 rebounds. The Grizzlies also shot 47 percent (34-of-73). 


"We played well enough to be in the game, but not well enough to
win," Massenburg said. "Some nights, it's just like that. You
give it all you have and you don't have anything more. We feel
we got some bad breaks, especially not getting a 3 in those last
