Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Larry Johnson scored 22 points and Marcus Camby came off the bench to add a season-high 19 and eight rebounds, leading the New York Knicks to a 93-78 victory over the New Jersey Nets.
Johnson made 9-of-14 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, as the Knicks posted consecutive victories for just the second time since March 16. Johnson made consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, with the second giving the Knicks their biggest lead, 87-67, with 4:09 to play.
Camby made 8-of-13 shots in 26 minutes and Patrick Ewing had 15 points and 15 rebounds for New York, which outrebounded New Jersey, 48-39.
"The last two games we did a better job of taking better shots and taking care of the basketball," Ewing said. "We worked on things in practice that we weren't doing well. We have to keep on building. We just want to play and we have to compete."
Allan Houston scored 13 points and Latrell Sprewell added 12 off the bench for the Knicks, who moved a half-game ahead of Philadelphia for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Kerry Kittles scored 16 points and Keith Van Horn and Lucious Harris each added 10 for New Jersey, which was swept in the three-game season series. The Nets, who entered the game as the league's worst shooting team at 39.3 percent, made just 26-of-78 shots (33 percent).
Stephon Marbury, a Brooklyn, New York native, had eight points and seven assists in his first game against the Knicks since coming to New Jersey from the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a three-team trade.
"They need a point guard. They will never win a championship with those two guys," Marbury said about Charlie Ward and former Net Chris Childs. "They will never, ever win and you can put that on the back page if you want to. They are not the guards you need to win a championship with.
"I just played bad tonight," added Marbury, who also had eight turnovers and made just 3-of-11 shots. "Tonight was just not my night. I just didn't have it. I was ineffective in all aspects of the game today."
Camby and Johnson combined for 25 points, hitting 10-of-13 shots in the first half, as the Knicks took a 55-42 lead. Johnson had five points as the Knicks closed the second quarter with an 11-2 run over the final four minutes.
"I hope I can go out there and play against the so-called elite teams that are ahead of us in the playoff race and just play hard," Camby said. "I'm just waiting my turn and being patient."
Van Horn opened the third period with a dunk and free throw after getting fouled by Kurt Thomas to pull the Nets within 55-45. But Johnson responded with a layup with 9:08 left for a 12-point lead and New Jersey failed to closer the deficit under double digits the rest of the way.
New York hit just 6-of-21 shots in the period but held a 69-56 lead as the Nets made the same number of baskets on one less attempt.
Marbury had all of his points in the first quarter, when the Knicks held a 26-25 edge. New Jersey's only lead of the game came when Jamie Feick hit a layup to make it 29-28 with 9:49 remaining in the second quarter. Camby answered with two free throws 12 seconds later and Sprewell's driving layup made it 32-29 with 8:37 left.
New Jersey was within 44-40 after Harris made a 3-pointer with 3:52 left. Johnson responded with a layup to trigger New York's 11-2 run.
