Game Story
SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 20 points and Detlef Schrempf added 17 as the Seattle SuperSonics rallied from a 15-point deficit to snap the Portland Trail Blazers four-game winning streak with an 87-86 victory.
Following a steal by Rasheed Wallace, Portland had the ball with 16 seconds left and a chance to win. Jim Jackson threw a high pass in the lane to Wallace, who could not come down with it cleanly. Following a scramble, the ball went off Wallace's foot and out of bounds with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Portland got one last chance after Schrempf's inbounds pass went off John Crotty's hands with two-tenths of a second left. But Jackson's pass from mid-court could not be tipped towards the basket as time ran out.
Hersey Hawkins took a pass from Vin Baker in the lane and converted a layup with 1:45 left for an 87-83 Sonics lead. Greg Anthony hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left, pulling Portland within one setting up the final moments.
Payton has been the Sonics leading scorer the last six games averaging 24.3 points. Seattle finished 2-1 on its homestand, but has only won twice in its last six outings.
Wallace scored 14 points and Jackson 12 for Portland, which came into the contest with a 10-5 road mark. Brian Grant finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
"We came out against a team that's got some talent," Anthony said. "We had mental lapses and we gave up a lot of uncontested shots. With a good team, you give them confidence and momentum."
Seattle used a 22-6 spurt to open the third quarter, turning a 12-point deficit into a 63-59 lead with 5:16 left in the third quarter. Baker and Olden Polynice each tallied six points in that spurt.
Baker, who was activated from the injured list prior to the game and reportedly berated by Payton in practice on Wednesday, finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. He missed three weeks and the past 10 games with a partially torn ligament in his right thumb.
"It felt great to beat a team like Portland," Baker said. "Obviously, they may be our first-round opponent if they stay the same and we stay the same. So it was important that we came out tonight and established our home court."
"Obviously it helps having Vin back," Schrempf said. "We have a little better of a low post presence where teams have to at least double team. With the shooters we have, that gives us a little more room to operate."
Portland scored six straight points to tie the game, 76-76, with 7:30 left. Jackson punctuated the run with a three-point play and finished the spurt with four points.
The Sonics outscored the Blazers 30-13 in the third period and shot 52 percent (12-of-23) from the floor while Portland hit 17 percent (4-of-24).
The Blazers netted seven straight points to grab an 11-4 lead with 6:01 remaining in the first quarter. Arvydas Sabonis had seven in the first 12 minutes as Portland led, 24-17. A 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Walt Williams, extended the lead to 39-24 with 7:57 to go in the first half.
