Game Story
MIAMI (Ticker) -- P.J. Brown scored 23 points and Tim Hardaway added 19 as the Miami Heat recorded their 14th straight victory over the Dallas Mavericks, 93-87.
Terry Porter had 15 points of the bench and Alonzo Mourning contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, which has not lost to Dallas since a 114-110 setback on January December 10, 1991.
The victory was the Heat's fourth straight and moved coach Pat Riley ahead of Dick Motta into fourth place on the all-time list with 936 wins. Riley's .702 winning percentage (936-398) is the best among coaches in the top 10 on the wins list.
"I'm going after (Lenny) Wilkens," Riley joked, referring to the all-time wins leader. "Seriously, I've had a lot of good players and I've coached a lot of good teams. Anytime you get to that pinnacle of great coaches, you're very humbled."
Gary Trent had 27 points and 13 rebounds and Michael Finley added 26 and seven for Dallas, which has lost five of its last six games and 10 straight on the road.
"We're just not getting it done," Trent said. "But if you're going to go down, go down swinging. We got away from our inside play and started becoming a jump-shooting team."
Brown had 12 points, making 6-of-8 shots from the field, as the Heat held a 47-46 edge at halftime. The Mavericks never had the lead in the third quarter, but closed within 51-50 when Finley made a 14-footer with 9:54 remaining. Brown took a pass from Mourning and answered with a jumper from the left corner to ignite a key 13-2 run.
"It's been like that all year. They come off me to double-team Zo (Mourning) and I spot up to take the shot," Brown said. "My teammates told me, `You're the most open guy on this team.' But I want to know what happened the first two years."
Hardaway had five points during the run, including a free throw that capped it for a 64-52 advantage with 4:43 to play in the third quarter. The Heat opened their biggest lead when Porter's 3-pointer made it 71-57 with 1:31 left.
Dallas closed to 75-66 with 8:40 left in the final period when Chris Anstey made a layup. Former Maverick Jamal Mashburn answered with a free throw five seconds later and Dallas did not close the gap to single digits again until Hubert Davis hit a 21-footer to make it 87-79 with 1:48 remaining.
Trent followed with a short jumper to cap an 8-0 burst, but Brown responded with a pair of free throws for an 89-81 advantage with one minute to go.
