Game Story
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic made the New York Knicks
look like the top team in the Eastern Conference in the first
half. Then things returned to normal in the second half.
Darrell Armstrong scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth
quarter and Penny Hardaway matched a season high with 30 as the
Magic erased an 11-point halftime deficit and stormed to an
81-72 victory.
Armstrong and rookie Michael Doleac combined for eight points in
a decisive 11-0 tear in the fourth quarter. Hardaway, who
finished two assists shy of a triple-double, led the comeback in
the third quarter, netting 11 points in a 21-4 spurt as Orlando
outscored New York 23-13 in the third quarter and 48-28 in the
second half.
"I just hung in there, I was missing some good shots," Armstrong
said. "A couple of shots that I rushed. But I give credit to
my teammates. Penny found me on a couple of 3s, I just knocked
them down. I was just happy to give them a lift because
basically, the first half, Penny carried us."
The Magic swept the three-game season series from the Knicks and
extended their lead atop the Eastern Conference to two games
over Indiana. They also retained their three-game lead atop the
Atlantic Division over the Miami Heat.
New York fell seven games behind Orlando in the Atlantic. It
has has lost consecutive games and six of its last nine.
Patrick Ewing scored 28 points for New York, which performed yet
another disappearing act in the fourth quarter. The Knicks shot
6-of-24 from the field in the final 12 minutes.
"Basically, we let this one slip away," said Ewing. "We played
a very good first half. In the second half, they played a
little harder than we did."
"Yeah, that's part of it," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said of
his team's inability to hit fourth-quarter shots. "There's
nothing good you can talk about in this game or our ability to
finish against good teams. You either win or you lose. I'm not
going to be up here making excuses for ourselves when we are
getting beat by teams better than ourselves."
The Knicks took their last lead at 66-64 on a 3-pointer by Chris
Childs with 6:51 to play, but Nick Anderson, who sat out three
games with a strained left hamstring, hit a 3-pointer to trigger
the game-breaking run.
Doleac sank two free throws with 4:52 left to give Orlando a
69-66 lead. Armstrong made the second of two from the line and
nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing to push the lead to 73-66
at the 3:11 mark. Doleac capped the run with a 17-footer 39
seconds later.
New York went 0-of-6 from the field and committed two turnovers
during Orlando's spurt. Ewing, who missed two shots from eight
feet and closer in the run, was 2-of-8 in the fourth quarter,
but one basket was a meaningless tip-in with 1:24 left.
"There is no explanation and there is no reason that that should
be happening," said Knicks forward Latrell Sprewell. "Especially
with a team like us. Every possession, we should be out there
like it's our chance to get in the playoffs or whatever it is to
get us mentally ready."
The Knicks came no closer than seven points down the stretch and
were roundly booed as the final seconds ticked away.
Ewing's free throw 71 seconds into the half gave New York its
largest lead at 45-33, but Hardaway reeled off seven straight
points and Orlando dominated the next 6 1/2 minutes.
Hardaway had consecutive dunks in a 23-second span to give the
Magic a 50-49 lead with 5:43 left and a 19-footer by Horace
Grant capped the run and gave Orlando a 54-49 edge with 4:05
left.
"We came out in the third quarter and everybody started making
shots and we hung around and got back into the game," Hardaway
said. "We pushed out to the lead, lost the lead, got back the
lead and didn't look back."
The Knicks closed the quarter with an 8-2 burst and held a 57-56
lead entering the final period.
Hardaway had 10 rebounds and eight assists for Orlando, which
shot only 38 percent (31-of-81) from the field but scored 20
points off 22 Knicks turnovers and enjoyed a 15-5 edge in free
throws. The Magic missed their first 10 3-pointers before
Armstrong hit one from the left side with 9:07 left, forging a
61-61 tie.
Armstrong, making his fourth straight start, went 5-of-20 from
the field but was better than Anderson, who came off the bench
late in the first quarter and hit only 1-of-11 from the field.
"I just think (Monday) night's game. ... it was a tough game,"
said Armstrong, who scored a career-high 28 in a 106-99 victory
over Boston. "Tonight, I felt a little fatigued at the
beginning, then I finally started getting into it a little bit.
We got through it and that's what counts."
New York shot under 40 percent (32-of-81) and scored only six
points off 14 Magic turnovers. The starting backcourt of Allan
Houston and Charlie Ward made only 7-of-26 shots. Ewing took
seven of the team's nine free throws.
