Game Story
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Veteran Grant Long keyed a pivotal second-half run and Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks as the Atlanta Hawks posted a 77-71 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
The Hawks completed a sweep of the home-and-home series and gave Atlanta seven straight triumphs over Charlotte in the regular season. The Hornets did beat Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs last season.
Long, who hit the winning jumper in Sunday's 85-83 victory, sparked a 15-5 burst tonight with four free throws 15 seconds apart. The run turned a tie game with 2:38 left in the third quarter into a 70-60 lead with 6:07 left in the contest. Long finished with nine points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
Rookie Roshown McLeod scored 13 points and Mookie Blaylock added 13 and eight assists for the Hawks, who have won eight of their last 10 overall. Atlanta moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Detroit and remained 1 1/2 games ahead of division-leader Indiana.
Eddie Jones tied a team record with seven steals for Charlotte, which has dropped five straight following a three-game winning streak. The Hornets shot just 34 percent (24-of-70) from the field and were outrebounded, 47-30.
"Our shooting is what did us in tonight," said Hornets interim coach Paul Silas. "We're getting wide open looks but we're just not making them. ... There is some frustration because we're just not winning."
Over the first nine minutes of third quarter, neither team led by more than two and there were five lead changes and three ties. David Wesley's 16-footer with 3:34 left forged the final tie.
After Long's free throws gave Atlanta a 59-55 edge, Mutombo added another from the line. But Brad Miller hit a free throw with 42 seconds to go to get Charlotte within 60-56 at the end of three quarters.
McLeod opened the fourth quarter with an 18-footer and dunk to extend the lead to 64-56 but Jones and Eldridge Recasner buried jumpers 15 seconds apart. Tyrone Corbin, another of the Hawks' key reserves, sank a 15-footer and added a layup with 7:12 left. Mutombo then capped the spurt with two free throws just prior to the midway point in the quarter.
The Hornets could get no closer than the final margin. Charlotte was 6-of-17 from the field over the final 12 minutes and outrebounded, 15-5.
"We are in every game that we are losing," Wesley said. "It's hard to figure out what the problem is. We have to hit more shots. We were outrebounded by 17 tonight. It's tough to win that way. If you don't make shots, we can't beat anybody."
"In the fourth quarter I felt like we settled in," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We ran off 10 points then felt more comfortable. Roshown McLeod hit a couple of big shots and we milked the situation."
The Hawks' bench combined to score 33 points and grab 16 rebounds while the Hornets' reserves managed just nine and 10.
"We've been playing well off the bench," McLeod said. "We have tried to give a lift and let the starters do their thing. We want to provide a spark."
Blaylock had nine points in a hotly contested first quarter as Atlanta held a 23-22 edge after 12 minutes. The Hawks pushed the lead to 28-22 just over a minute into the second quarter but Charlotte led 39-38 at the half.
Jones finished with 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
