Game Story
BOSTON (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets may not be the worst team
in the Atlantic Division after all.
One day after tying an NBA record with 11 steals, Kendall Gill
totaled seven with 19 points and five assists as last-place New
Jersey pulled away for a 91-79 wire-to-wire victory over the
reeling Boston Celtics.
Keith Van Horn scored 25 points and Stephon Marbury added 20 and
eight assists for the Nets, who have won a season-high three in
a row after a 5-24 start. They are 2-15 on the road, with both
wins coming here.
"We know our chances of making the playoffs are slim," Marbury
said. "But maybe if we play defense like this the rest of the
way, we'll win the rest of our games."
New Jersey forced the Celtics into 23 turnovers and scored 20
fast-break points.
"The energy we're displaying at the defensive end is as good as
any team in the league," Nets interim coach Don Casey said.
"It's a collective effort, it's wonderful."
Boston is 2 1/2 games ahead of New Jersey in the Atlantic but
has lost three in a row and six straight at the FleetCenter, one
shy of the longest home skid in franchise history, last done in
February 1997.
"I thought we had good effort tonight," said Celtics coach Rick
Pitino, whose team has dropped nine of 11. "There have been
nights where I have been disappointed."
Antoine Walker scored a season-high 32 points for the Celtics,
who were within 75-68 to start the fourth quarter before
allowing 10 consecutive points. Former Net Kenny Anderson broke
the drought with a layup 7:22 into the period, but Boston still
trailed, 85-70.
Gill teamed with Marbury for eight of the 10 points to start the
fourth and capped the run with a steal and reverse dunk, giving
New Jersey a 17-point lead with eight minutes left.
"If our defense plays well we can open up our style of game,"
Gill said. "The defense we're playing right now helps us on the
offensive end."
Gill recorded his second career triple-double Saturday with 15
points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals in an 88-77 victory over
Miami.
"I felt they stole a couple of steals away from me (today)," he
said. "I thought I had 10."
The Celtics trimmed a 56-41 deficit to four points on four
occasions in the third quarter but could not get any closer.
After getting within 71-67 in the final minute of the period,
they missed their next nine shots.
"I think we were there in the fourth quarter, making a run, but
then we ran out of gas," Anderson said. "They are one of the
best teams in steals in the league and they got us tonight."
"We made some crucial mistakes, gave them too many fast breaks
and layups on too many turnovers," Celtics rookie Paul Pierce
added.
Boston totaled only 11 points in the fourth quarter and shot 37
percent (30-of-80) overall. Pierce was 1-of-10, with the bench
going 4-of-16.
Kerry Kittles totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals
for New Jersey, which shot 40 percent (35-of-87), missing all
nine of its 3-pointers.
Playing their second game without injured star center Jayson
Williams, who is out for the season with a broken leg, the Nets
were outrebounded, 49-41. Jamie Feick grabbed 12 boards off the
bench.
Walker and Pierce had 11 rebounds each. Vitaly Potapenko added
12 points and nine boards for Boston.
