Game Story
INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors
showed up and by the time the Los Angeles Lakers did, it was too
late.
Donyell Marshall scored 14 points and the Warriors led virtually
from start to finish en route to a surprising 81-76 victory over
the mistake-prone Lakers.
Bimbo Coles added 13 points for Golden State, which led by as
many as 17 points in the third quarter before holding on for its
first road win over the Lakers since April 12, 1994. It snapped
an eight-game skid at the Great Western Forum and was the
Warriors' second victory in the last 13 meetings between the teams.
Shaquille O'Neal had 21 points and 11 rebounds Kobe Bryant added
17 for Los Angeles, which had a three-game winning streak
stopped.
Dennis Rodman picked up his first ejection in a Laker uniform,
collecting a pair of technical fouls with 2:04 remaining. He
committed a hard foul on John Starks to pick up the first
technical and was ejected when he continued to question the
call.
"What's new I got to be the only guy in the history of the NBA
to get thrown out for doing nothing," Rodman said. "Not throwing
a punch, not harassing the referees, not doing nothing, but by
me saying the simplest things."
Marshall scored 12 of his points in the first half, helping the
Warriors to a 47-36 advantage. Golden State held the Lakers to
just 29 percent shooting (12-of-42) in opening 24 minutes and to
their lowest point total in the first half this season.
The Warriors continued to have their way in the third quarter,
scoring the first six points to take their biggest lead at 53-36
following Jason Caffey's jumper with 10:13 left in the period.
Golden State held a 65-53 advantage entering the fourth.
Booed for most of the second half, the Lakers scored 16 of the
first 24 points in the final quarter, capped by O'Neal's dunk
to close to 73-69 with 4:09 remaining.
However, despite having a roster full of stars, the Lakers
continued to show a lack of poise down the stretch.
Rodman's techincals sent Chris Mills to the line, where he sank
1-of-2 attempts to push the lead to five. Following a Golden
State miss, the Lakers called timeout but were unable to inbound
the ball, giving it back to Golden State.
Marshall converted 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead to six
before Derek Fisher nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Lakers
within 75-72 withn 85 seconds to go.
But the Warriors would not be denied. Coles, who made 6-of-14
shots, drilled a jumper just as the shot clock expired to extend
the lead to five with 61 seconds left.
O'Neal made 1-of-2 foul shots and Bryant hit a pair of shots
from the line with 27 seconds to bring the Lakers within 77-75.
But the Lakers committed another blunder down the stretch.
Before the Warriors could get the ball in, Glen Rice
fouled Starks, resulting in one free throw and possession for
Golden State.
Starks hit the free throw and Mills drained a pair of foul shots
to give the Warriors an 80-75 lead with 23 seconds left. The
Lakers got within four after Bryant's foul shot four seconds
later but could get no closer.
Golden State shot 42 percent (32-of-77), while holding the
Lakers to 34 percent (26-of-76).
"We started the game and missed three layups and four
consecutive free throws," Bryant said. "They didn't shoot a very
high percentage but we shot 34 percent. You can't win a
basketball game if you don't make shots."
