Game Story
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 14 of his 23
points in the decisive third quarter as the Utah Jazz continued
their mastery of the Golden State Warriors with a 92-85 victory.
The Jazz held a 44-38 advantage at halftime, but fueled by
Malone's effort in the third quarter opened a 15-point bulge
heading into the final 12 minutes.
Bryon Russell added 20 points for Utah, which has beaten the
Warriors 10 straight times since a 93-82 loss on April 14, 1996.
The Jazz have won 15 of the last 16 meetings.
"It felt pretty good," said Russell of the win. "It's just good
to win because we've been struggling lately. It feels a whole
lot better than it did the last two games on the road. What we
need to keep on winning is to come out with a little more
attitude."
Rookie Antawn Jamison collected 23 points and 13 rebounds and
Chris Mills had 17 points off the bench for the Warriors, who
have lost three of their last four games.
The Jazz held a 57-48 advantage with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in
the third quarter before showing why they are one of top teams
in the league.
John Stockton made 1-of-2 free throws and Malone scored
consecutive baskets before Russell converted a free throw to
give the Jazz a 63-48 cushion with 4:43 remaining in the period.
Stockton finished with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also
handed out seven assists.
"We certainly need to be working to get back in that direction,"
commented Stockton, whose team has split its last eight games
after a 19-4 start. "One of the things we rely on is consistency
and until we have eight or 10 games like that, we're not there
yet."
After making just 3-of-8 shots in the first half, Malone went
4-of-6 from the floor and made 6-of-9 attempts from the free
throw line in the third quarter helping the Jazz open a 73-58
bulge.
Utah maintained a double-digit advantage for the entire fourth
quarter until the Warriors scored some garbage-time points.
The Jazz did an outstanding job on Golden State leading scorer
John Starks, holding him to six points on 3-of-12 shooting.
Starks, who averages 13.8 point per game, was coming off a
1-for-11 performance two nights ago in a loss to Phoenix.
Russell made 8-of-13 shots as the Jazz shot an impressive 57
percent (35-of-61), compared to just 40 percent (35-of-88) for
Golden State.
"They are the best offensive executing team in the league,"
Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "They just cut us up.
We had a lot of trouble with Karl and Bryon Russell. For us to
beat Utah, we have to do what we did on the boards, but we have
to defend. We didn't defend well tonight."
Led by Jamison and Erick Dampier's 10 rebounds, the Warriors did
manage a 47-34 rebounding edge, including a monstrous 22-5
advantage on the offensive boards.
Utah remained two games back of the Portland Trail Blazers for
the best record in the league.
