Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- John Stockton to Karl Malone still is
too much for Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and Scottie
Pippen.
Stockton fed Malone for an 18-footer with 2.7 seconds to play as
the Utah Jazz rallied from a 15-point deficit in the fourth
quarter to end the Houston Rockets' nine-game winning streak,
88-87.
Malone was limited to 16 points but came through in the clutch
thanks in part to Stockton, who had 11 points and 12 assists to
help Utah move one game in front of Houston atop the Midwest
Division.
"It's a very big win, they had basically tied us in the
division," Stockton said. "We haven't been playing very well and
we needed to stop their roll and stop our skid as well."
Stockton penetrated in the lane and Charles Barkley came over to
help, leaving Malone open on the right wing. Stockton slipped a
pass between defenders to Malone, who had a clear look at the
basket to put Utah in front.
"I just looked for an opening," Stockton said. "Their guys
closed in and Karl shot a beautiful shot out there."
"If you get the opportunity to shoot, you shoot it," Malone
said. "Passing wasn't in my repertoire at that point. We didn't
have any time to do it, anyway."
Olajuwon missed badly on a jumper as time expired. His hook in
the lane with 46 seconds remaining gave the Rockets an 87-86
lead. The ensuing possession saw Malone get great low position
on Olajuwon, but Pippen came from nowhere to block his shot.
Olajuwon scored 32 points and had a chance to pad the Rockets'
lead, but missed a 14-foot baseline jumper and the Jazz called
timeout with eight seconds to play.
With 7:52 left in the third quarter, Olajuwon buried a similar
shot to become the 12th player in NBA history to score 25,000
points.
"It was a tough loss, but you can't look back," Olajuwon said.
"You have to look at this as a new beginning."
Bryon Russell tied a career high with 25 points for the Jazz,
who suffered three overtime losses in dropping four of their
previous six outings. All four of those defeats came on the
road.
"You know, we've had some games we could have won and didn't,
and this one we probably shouldn't have won but did," said Jazz
guard Jeff Hornacek. "So it's a crazy reason as it is and I
think somebody still owes us a couple of close ones."
Utah was thankful to return home, improving to 13-1 at the Delta
Center and beating Houston for the seventh straight time. It
was the first meeting of the season between the division rivals.
The teams also have met in the playoffs in each of the last two
years, with Utah winning both series.
Barkley had 11 rebounds but scored just nine points on 2-of-11
shooting. Pippen had 10 points and eight boards but committed
five turnovers for Houston, which had been seeking its longest
winning streak since a 15-game run during the 1993-94 campaign.
"Our gameplan was to not let Karl or John Stockton beat us, so I
don't know what happened," Pippen said. "It didn't work."
Pippen fed Othella Harrington for a layup that gave Houston a
commanding 78-63 lead with 8:07 to play. Utah stormed back with
a 23-5 burst to set up a thrilling finish.
Russell and Shandon Anderson had layups before Malone found
Stockton for a 17-footer that sliced the margin to 78-69 with
6:21 remaining. Shortly thereafer, Stockton assisted on
Anderson's inside basket and Malone's three-point play that cut
the deficit to 81-74.
Russell followed with a 3-pointer and Anderson sank two foul
shots to make it a two-point game with four minutes left.
Houston finally answered as Olajuwon made a hook shot, but Thurl
Bailey hit a free throw and Russell hit a 15-footer to pull the
Jazz within 83-82.
Stockton then found Anderson for a layup and raced downcourt on
the break to feed Malone for a lay-in that capped the burst,
giving Utah an 86-83 lead with 1:34 to go. Olajuwon sank two
free throws and his short hook after Malone missed a 16-footer.
"All we had to do was make a couple of plays at both ends of the
court," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "But we couldn't do
it, and you've got to give them credit. They didn't quit."
Russell scored nine points in the fourth, when Anderson scored
eight of his 12 and Malone added seven. Stockton collected five
assists and two of his three steals over the final 12 minutes.
Barkley and Pippen combined for one point in the final period,
with Barkley missing all six of his shots from the field.
Houston came away from a tight first half with a 43-41 lead, but
broke open the game by closing the third quarter with an 18-5
run. Olajuwon scored 10 points in that burst, including the
first six, and his jumper with 9.9 seconds left gave the Rockets
a 71-57 cushion heading into the fourth.
