Game Story
SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- On the day he was named the NBA's Player
of the Month for March, Tim Duncan made an early statement for
player of the year.
Duncan exploded for a career-high 39 points, gave San Antonio
the lead for good with a three-point play in the third quarter
and ignited a game-clinching 6-0 run with a short jumper as the
Spurs held off the Vancouver Grizzlies, 103-91.
With mentor David Robinson sidelined with a left knee problem,
Duncan took over. He scored 10 points in the first quarter, 12
in the second and 13 in the third. He had half of the Spurs'
points in the third period, when Vancouver rallied from a
12-point halftime deficit.
"It was a great game," Duncan said. "My teammates got me in good
position to score. The opportunities just came to me. I was
not necessarily looking for more shots, but I got the ball in
good position to shoot."
Duncan surpassed his previous career high of 35 points, set on
March 4, 1998 against Golden State. Ironically, Robinson was
the last Spur to net 40 points, reaching the plateau on April 4,
1996 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
"He was amazing," Spurs guard Tim Kerr said of Duncan. "He's an
unbelievable player. It's scary that he's only in his second
year. He totally dominated tonight. Maybe he got the ball more
because we went to him all night. We usually go to David when
he is in there, so that gave more shots to Tim."
Duncan also grabbed 13 rebounds and Sean Elliott contributed 14
points for San Antonio, which has won six straight in the
series. The Spurs recorded a 92-88 overtime victory over
Vancouver in the teams' last meeting on March 20.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 27 points for the Grizzlies, who were
coming off a win over Denver on Tuesday. Vancouver has won two
straight just once this season, accomplishing the feat on
February 14 and 16.
"Perhaps we were a little tired mentally," Vancouver coach Brian
Hill said. "It also seemed like they converted every turnover
and every missed shot into baskets. We believed we could win if
we held onto the ball and hit our shots."
San Antonio built a 50-38 lead after the first 24 minutes but
the Grizzlies scored the first 12 points after halftime to forge
a tie.
"We did a poor job of being ready to play tonight," Abdur-Rahim
said. "At the half we got back into the game, but we couldn't
put it all together at the end."
The Grizzlies continued their strong play and built a 61-56 lead
with just over six minutes left in the quarter when Abdur-Rahim
capped a quick 5-0 spurt with two free throws. But Avery
Johnson and Duncan hit jumpers to make it a one-point lead.
"We didn't come out as focused as we should have," Johnson said.
"We picked up our game and things started to even out."
Vancouver had a chance to regain the lead but Michael Smith
could not convert a layup. Smith got his own rebound, but the
Grizzlies suffered a 24-second shot clock violation. Duncan
then took a feed from Malik Rose and threw down a dunk while
being fouled by Cherokee Parks. The ensuing free throw gave the
Grizzlies a 63-61 edge with 4:30 left.
San Antonio took a 76-71 lead into the fourth and led 88-80
after Rose's layup with 7:37 left in the game. J.R. Henderson
scored for the Grizzlies, but Duncan's turnaround jumper on the
right baseline pushed the lead back to eight points. Antonio
Daniels scored the next four points from the foul line as the
Spurs pulled away.
Rose had 11 points and eight rebounds and Jerome Kersey added 10
points for San Antonio, which shot 52 percent (41-of-79) and
turned 16 Grizzlies' turnovers into 21 points.
"The team effort was great," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
"In the third quarter we missed some shots and for a brief
period we took some things for granted. We got it back
eventually. It was just a good effort by a lot of people."
Smith totaled 12 points and 11 rebounds and Parks and Michael
Bibby contributed 10 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who held a
45-40 advantage on the boards.
"Four or five plays turned the game around and determined the
outcome tonight," added Hill. "We didn't get any of those plays
to go our way tonight."
