Game Story
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Point guards Chris Childs and Charlie Ward
combined for 14 of New York's final 18 points and the Knicks
held on for a 78-74 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who
missed two wide-open jumpers in the final six seconds.
Childs netted the first six points and Ward the final five of an
11-0 run midway through the fourth quarter as the Knicks turned
a five-point deficit into a 71-65 lead with 3:24 to play.
"It (playing with Ward) just gives us a different look as far as
needing to execute and penetrate on offense because the whole
game we were too stationary," said Childs. "So that gives us
another option."
Cleveland fought back to force a 73-73 tie when Shawn Kemp
followed two missed free throws by Andrew DeClercq with a
basket. But Patrick Ewing made a pair of free throws with 40
seconds left, and after Kemp converted one from the line, Childs
did the same to give the Knicks a 76-74 lead with 20 seconds
remaining.
The Cavaliers had two excellent chances to score, but Derek
Anderson missed a 3-pointer from the right wing. After he got
the rebound, Brevin Knight misfired on a short jumper from the
right side.
"I thought Derek was going to make it," said Cleveland coach
Mike Fratello. "Then Brevin had a chippie. If it goes in, we
would still be playing. But it didn't tonight."
Childs grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 1.1 seconds
remaining and Ewing iced the Knicks' second straight narrow
victory by making two foul shots with 0.7 seconds left.
"I'm glad we got the win this time," said Ewing. "We made some
big shots and free throws and we made some big stops."
Allan Houston scored 16 points, Ward added 14 and Ewing 11 for
New York, which defeated Indiana 94-93 on Tuesday, surviving
three misses by the Pacers in the final moments.
Kemp netted 25 points for Cleveland, which blew a 13-point lead
and scored just 15 points in the fourth quarter.
"I was really pleased with our team tonight," added Fratello,
obviously talking about his team's defense and effort. "This is
the kind of performance that we have been waiting for. I
couldn't be more proud of what we did out there."
Childs' began the 11-0 spurt with a three-point play and added a
3-pointer that made it 66-65, New York's first lead since 7-5.
After a timeout, Ward drilled a 3-pointer and Childs' stripped
Cedric Henderson, leading to Ward's layup that gave New York a
six-point advantage.
"I was out there, so I had to do something," Childs said of his
3-pointer. "I hadn't played well the whole game. I had a guy
on me and Marcus (Camby) set a good pick on him and I came off
it and I took it. If I miss, I miss. But I'm going to take
it."
Kemp broke Cleveland's eight-possession drought with two free
throws and Wesley Person drained a 3-pointer from the left
corner that cut New York's advantage to 71-70 with two minutes
left.
Childs made a pair of free throws before DeClercq connected on
the first of two free throws. When DeClercq missed the second
attempt, Ward tipped the rebound to Childs, but moments later
gave Cleveland back the ball by throwing a bad pass. The Cavs
took advantage and tied the game when Kemp benefited from a
goaltending call.
"If you make those (free throws), it's not as close of a game
towards the end," said DeClercq, whose team shot 14-of-24 from
the line. "That was the difference there."
Latrell Sprewell started in place of injured forward Larry
Johnson and netted 11 points for New York, which overcame 37
percent shooting (24-of-65) and 16 turnovers that led to 20
points for the Cavaliers. Ewing grabbed 11 rebounds as New York
held a 42-37 advantage on the boards.
Johnson has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right
knee and could be sidelined up to a week.
"We miss Larry, but we had guys step up tonight," said Houston.
"We starting to grow. I wish we didn't have those streaks at
the beginning, where we didn't know what to do. But now we're
finding ways to win."
Henderson and Person scored 10 points apiece and Kemp grabbed 13
rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot 38 percent (29-of-77) and
were 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.
The Knicks scored just 52 points through the first three
quarters and were trailing by seven entering the final period.
But Camby opened the fourth with a layup, Houston scored on a
runner and Ewing made two free throws, cutting Cleveland's lead
to 59-58.
"When they were chipping away at the lead, it was a simple case
of turnovers," said Fratello. "We had good looks at the basket
and we have to go to the free throw line and make free throws."
