Game Story
SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz avoided being
embarrassed but failed to avoid overtime.
One game after being blown out by the league's worst team, the
Jazz dropped their fourth straight overtime contest with a
104-101 loss to the upstart Sacramento Kings, who again played
without Chris Webber.
Vernon Maxwell scored a season-high 33 points for the Kings, who
also got a huge spark from Scot Pollard. The former University
of Kansas standout, who had played just three minutes all year,
had career highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"I'm kind of like the old 'Field of Dreams' saying, 'If you play
me, I will do good,'" Pollard said.
Pollard played 36 minutes to help fill the void left by Webber,
the Kings' top scorer and rebounder who missed his second
straight game due to a stomach virus.
Two free throws by Pollard tied the game, 101-101, with 1:10 to
go. After a turnover by John Stockton, Vlade Divac sank the
go-ahead foul shots with 45 seconds to play.
Once again, the Jazz's fortunes rested on Bryon Russell, who
scored nine of his career-high 25 points in overtime of a
120-112 win over Sacramento on February 15. This time, Russell
was called for a questionable offensive foul with 4.2 seconds
left, nullifying his basket in the lane. In the waning moments,
Russell threw away an inbounds pass that was intercepted by
Michael Hawkins.
The Jazz suddenly are scrambling after owning the league's best
record less than two weeks ago. They dropped a pair of overtime
games before seemingly getting back on track with wins over
Miami and Vancouver. But they were stunned by the Los Angeles
Clippers on Saturday, 103-77.
"We're going through some tough times now, but we're a team
that's always bounced back and worked through them," said Jazz
All-Star Karl Malone. "We have them every year and this is
tough times now for everybody because it's no fun losing. Some
people accept it, and we don't here."
Malone scored 20 points to pace Utah, which appeared in control
with an 89-82 lead with less than four minutes left in
regulation. Sacramento answered with an 11-2 run and Utah
needed two free throws by Adam Keefe to tie the game, 95-95,
with 1:05 remaining.
Utah thought it had the victory in regulation. Stockton's
jumper bounced off the front of the rim and Keefe gathered the
loose ball in the lane. He quickly attempted a short hook that
swished through at the buzzer, but replays clearly showed he
released it after time expired.
Divac was 0-for-9 from the field, but hit all eight of his free
throws and grabbed 13 rebounds. Rookie Predrag Stojakovic
scored 17 of his season-high 26 points in the third quarter,
helping Sacramento turn an eight-point halftime deficit into a
72-68 lead heading into the fourth period.
All of the Kings' double-figure scorers came from the bench.
Without Webber, Sacramento's starting five managed just 21
points on a 5-of-30 shooting.
"We certainly miss Chris, but as long as he is out, we know we
have to work that much harder and try to step it up to make this
team win some games," Stojakovic said. "Tonight, the bench was
able to carry the team."
Maxwell connected on 6-of-9 3-pointers, Stojakovic hit 5-of-8
and the Kings finished 15-of-30 from beyond the arc. Stojakovic
had four 3-pointers and Maxwell added a pair in the third, when
Sacramento set a team record with seven 3-pointers.
"They had some guys that got hot from the outside and really
hurt us out there," Malone added. "Just because they didn't
have Chris, they came out to play and you have to give them
credit for that."
Malone's two free throws made it 89-82, but Hawkins responded
with a 3-pointer and Maxwell had a fast-break dunk. Divac sank
two foul shots to tie the game, 89-89, with 3:02 remaining.
Keefe came back with a layup, but Maxwell buried a 3-pointer and
Pollard sank a free throw to give the Kings a 93-91 advantage.
Jeff Hornacek had a 3-pointer and baseline jumper around a
follow shot by Pollard to help Utah to a 101-99 lead midway
through the extra session. A steal by Hornacek gave Utah a
chance to pad the lead, but Stockton turned it over and Pollard
hit two free throws after being fouled by Malone.
"I'm so used to being a cheerleader," Pollard said. "I've been
one for 30 games this season and most of last year, so this is
definitely different for me."
Another bad pass by Stockton, who committed five turnovers, led
to Divac's two free throws. Hornacek blew his chance to put the
Jazz in front with a missed 3-pointer, and Pollard pulled down
the rebound. Stockton came up with a steal and fed Russell, who
saw Pollard step in front to take the charge.
Maxwell sank a foul shot with 3.9 seconds left. Russell tried
to hit Malone near mid-court but Hawkins picked off the errant
pass.
Hawkins had season highs with 11 points and seven assists,
seeing 33 minutes at point guard as rookie standout Jason
Williams struggled to just three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
"To come in here with a team that had just lost three out of
five and who happens to be one of the best in the league, you
know they're going to be ready," said Kings coach Rick Adelman
said. "We talked about it before the game and I said it doesn't
matter who's out there. If you can compete, good things will
happen, and the second group competed."
Stockton had 14 points and 11 assists, Howard Eisley chipped in
14 points and Hornacek added 12. Utah shot 51 percent
(42-of-82) from the floor but made just three 3-pointers and
committed an uncharacteristic 26 turnovers.
