Game Story
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Bimbo Coles scored 16 of his
season-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Golden State
Warriors snapped the league-leading Portland Trail Blazers'
six-game winning streak with a 93-90 upset.
"I didn't go out expecting to lose tonight," said Coles, whose
team is the first in the league to post two victories against
the Blazers. "You can't take anything away from Portland,
they're a great team. They're the best team in the league, but
I'm not going to come in here and jump up and down."
Coles hit a running jump shot with 52 seconds remaining to give
the Warriors an 84-81 lead and made five free throws in the
waning moments as Golden State earned a split of its four-game
season series with Portland.
"We're strong in a couple of areas where they're strong," said
ex-Blazers and current Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo. "It's
not like we know how to play them or anything like that. I
think they are a great team and we have been very fortunate.
"We're like them and we're certainly not as good as them but we
keep them from getting too far ahead of us. I wouldn't want to
make a living playing them."
The Blazers, who suffered just their second loss in 20 games
when leading after three quarters, pulled within 91-90 on
Rasheed Wallace's 3-pointer with 9.6 seconds remaining.
Golden State's Chris Mills went to the line with 7.5 seconds
left and made the first free throw before missing badly on his
second attempt. Donyell Marshall was able to tip the long
rebound to Coles, who made 1-of-2 free throws with 4.3 seconds
remaining.
Former Warrior Jim Jackson's desperation heave at the buzzer
bounced harmlessly off the backboard, dropping Portland to 0-2
at Golden State this season.
"I kept telling Jimmy to go to the other side," Marshall said.
"I told him he wasn't going to get the rebound so it was a
challenge. Me and Jimmy were gabbing back and forth. I told
him if I had a hand on the ball I was going to get it.
Afterwards, we just laughed."
John Starks scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers in the
fourth quarter. Marshall added 10 points for the Warriors, who
have won three of their last four games.
"I haven't been shooting the ball well, especially in big
games," Starks said. "But I need to come out and make a
difference. These types of games build character. We may have
to face this team in the first round (of the playoffs) and so we
sent a message."
Arvydas Sabonis had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Brian Grant
added 14 points for Portland, which held a 64-61 lead entering
the fourth quarter.
Marshall finished with 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who held a
commanding 51-34 advantage on the boards. Golden State shot 47
percent (39-of-83) and committed 17 turnovers.
Wallace scored 13 points and Walt Wiliams added 12 for Portland,
which shot 41 percent (32-of-78) and was 22-of-29 at the line.
Coles was 9-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-5 in the final
12 minutes.
Starks hit a 3-pointer from the right sideline to knot the
contest at 75-75 with 4:17 to play. Wallace hit an 18-footer to
put Portland ahead by two but Greg Anthony was called for a
technical foul, resulting in a free throw by Coles.
"We don't respect them," said Anthony. "We just don't respect
them. It's as simple as that. When you don't respect a team
that plays hard, those are the things that are going to happen.
Obviously, we didn't learn from our first experience here. Live
and learn. It's a done deal now."
The Blazers suffered a 105-100 double overtime loss here on
February 14 before rebounding with a pair of home victories
against the Warriors.
Coles and Jason Caffey connected on consecutive jumpers to put
Golden State ahead for good, 80-77, with 2:17 left.
Portland appeared to have matters in hand in the second quarter
as Isaiah Rider's four-foot jumper gave them a 44-30 bulge with
3:47 remaining.
But the Warriors responded with a 13-2 run capped by Marshall's
emphatic slam with 2.3 seconds left that pulled Golden State
within 46-43 at the break.
"In the second quarter, we let them change the momentum of the
game on us," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We were on a
good roll and we didn't sustain it. We didn't close it out the
way we needed to close it out. But they made some pretty good
shots against a pretty good defense. That's just the way it
goes."
