Game Story
DALLAS (Ticker) -- Facing the lowly Dallas Mavericks was just
what the Seattle SuperSonics needed.
Gary Payton and Detlef Schrempf each scored 20 points as the
SuperSonics opened a 21-point lead midway through the fourth
quarter and cruised to a 109-101 victory over Dallas.
Seattle held off a Mavericks' rally in the final minutes and
avoided falling to the .500 mark for the first time since
splitting the first two games of last season.
"Our goal is to be aggressive and set the tone early," Schrempf
said. "We have been saying that, but that's what we need to do
every game."
Schrempf was 7-of-10 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds in
32 minutes.
"I had some postups for the first time in a long time, instead
of just going to the basket," he added. "My turnaround jumper
was falling. When you have a good feel for it, why not just
stick with it "
The Sonics rebounded from Sunday's 104-87 loss at Detroit and
improved to only 4-9 on the road. Seattle (15-13) has gone 9-13
since starting the season 6-0 under first-year coach Paul
Westphal.
"Our team knows we have to win some road games and after that
game yesterday, we were anxious to be able to play again,"
Westphal said.
The Sonics never trailed after struggling to defeat Dallas at
home, 92-86, in the season opener on February 5. Seattle jumped
to a 15-4 lead midway through the first quarter and never looked
back.
"We have to come out energized for our team to get going,"
Sonics center Olden Polynice said. "We've got to be very
energetic and very vocal and play with a lot of emotion. I
thought we did a good job of that tonight."
After the Sonics built a 94-73 lead on Schrempf's layup with
4:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, Dallas ripped off a 9-0
run and pulled within 95-83 on Erick Strickland's steal and
layup with 3:02 left.
A 3-pointer by Hubert Davis and a three-point play by Dirk
Nowitski cut the deficit to 102-94, but Seattle restored its
double-figure advantage on Rashard Lewis' free throw and Drew
Barry's 3-pointer.
"We knew we had to come out with energy and I thought all the
starters did," Westphal added.
Gary Trent scored 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the
Mavericks, who have dropped seven of their last nine. Trent
returned after missing Saturday's loss at San Antonio due to a
stomach virus.
After scoring 15 points on 4-of-20 shooting in the third
quarter, the Mavericks erupted for a season-high 44 points in
the fourth, going 16-of-26 from the field.
Seattle starters made 27-of-49 shots from the field, compared to
only 18-of-53 for the Mavericks. Discounting Trent, Dallas shot
38 percent (30-of-80) as a team.
"They jumped out on us quick and if you don't come out right
away, that's what's going to happen," Strickland said. "You get
yourself in a hole. Then we were fighting an uphill battle the
whole night."
The Sonics opened a 15-4 lead on Billy Owens' layup with 6:40
left in the first period. But Dallas climbed within 38-34 on
Trent's basket with 4:13 left before halftime.
Seattle responded with a 12-3 spurt, taking a 50-37 lead on Dale
Ellis' 3-pointer. Dallas scored the last seven points of the
period to make it 50-44 at the break.
But the Sonics took control in the third quarter, outscoring the
Mavericks, 27-15. Seattle extended their advantage to 77-57 on
Payton's turnaround jumper in the lane with 14 seconds left in
the period.
"This was a not a good effort by our team," Dallas coach Don
Nelson said. "I'm a little surprised. I really thought we
would be ready to play tonight. This is what I considered a
winnable game for us. The bottom line is we just had a hard
time controlling Payton. He played a terrific game."
Owens added 15 points for the Sonics while Polynice grabbed 12
rebounds. John Crotty chipped in with 11 points.
Strickland contributed 17 points for the Mavericks and Samaki
Walker pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds. Michael Finley
scored 13 points and Shawn Bradley had 12.
"I thought they had control of the game from beginning to end,"
Walker said. "We have to come out with energy, and we never came
out with energy."
